The load probably caused the machine to shake so violently that the belt has come off the drum (can you hear the moror quietly whirring when it should be agitating)
Step 1, as always, unplug from the mains.
Most hotpoint machines have a removable plug on the side of the lid towards the front (A little smaller than your little finger nail). slip a knife behind the plug and gently lever it out (it has 2 little pins that fit holes in the lid) Once removed, you will see a torque screw (Star head) is revealed. Unscrew this screw on both sides.
lift the front of the lid very slightly and then strike the front surface hard with the heel of your hand, pushing it backwards about a cenrimetre to disengage the clips at the back of the lid.
It now lifts off.
Look down the back of the machine, you will see the big pulley that is attached to the back of the drum and almost at floor lever, you will see the grooved shaft of the pulley on the motor. Somewhere, you will see the black belt, lying on the floor.
Take the belt and put it back over the small motor pulley, then hold the belt in place where you want it on the big pulley. Slowly turn the large pulley, so that the belt slips back in place. spin the pulley a few times and make sure it is lined up on the big pulley nice and evenly. If it is a bit out, you may need to go back or forward a groove on the motor pulley to line it up.
Once you're satisfied this is done, rin the machine on a spin cycle (with the lid off and an empty drum). The belt should stay on and all should be well. If it is, put the lid back on and the job is done.
