Question about Computers & Internet

1 Answer

My laptop will just shut off, like when the power goes out and your television turns off. It happens usually when I am listening to music on internet radio, but it'll also happen randomly when I'm not necessarily running anything too taxing. My friend said it may be something with the motherboard, the laptop is approximately 3.5 years old, has anti-virus software and is routinely checked for viruses and whatnot.

The laptop could be over-heating, or if your running it on battery only the battery may be faulty or not charged enough. Even when windows says a battery is full, its not always correct.

An easy way to see if it might be software is to boot to a bootable cd and let the computer sit for a while.

It could also be your ram, or other failing device. Best thing would be to have it checked out by a professional.

I have an HP Pavillion dv9500 laptop. After shutting down, all the keyboard lights to the right of the power button stay lit. This shows the power is not shut off but should be. Any solutions?

First of all, is the laptop on charge? Usually when the laptop is on charge there is a light somewhere that remains on until it is charged. After charging, the light goes of and if the laptop is not used for a long time, the battery usually discharges a little and the system senses this and recharges it as top-up and the light comes on, then goes off once charged. If your laptop is not on charge, then there is 2 things that could be the cause. 1) It is not shut down properly (on stand-by). 2) It may be downloading updates and it would probably shut down later, depending on the size of the update, it may take a few minutes or up to 1 hour. If in 1 hour the light is still on, then there is a problem with the laptop and need to be checked by a professional, or, altermnatively, turn it off a second time and see if the light still remains on. Lastly, you did not state what kind of lights remain on, Power, Charging, Standby, etc. it is difficult to help you with your query as the problem could be the laptop itself. There are other things that could keep the laptop on, and that may be if your laptop is connected to a network. Regards.

It shut off.

Turn it on by holding in the power button - it is normal for that model to go to sleep while it is playing, as a powersaving feature - but it shouldn't stop playing the music, the screen should just go away. Usually pressing any key will wake it back up.

Volume cuts in and out

Since a CD/DVD player is a digital device, it can be susceptible to such things as power line glitches, interference from other digital equipment and even the ignition interference from nearby passing cars. With older analog gear, you might get a short burst of static, whereas it can completely shut down a digital device sometimes (glitches interrupt its internal program). Sadly, there's nothing you can do about this except plugging the unit into a power line conditioner. You might try jiggling the connecting cables (especially the audio cable), but it sounds more like a random glitch since you can use your remote to fix it. They haven't yet worked out all the bugs in digital equipment, unfortunately. It's also possible that a defect in the DVD player was not caught at the factory during final test.

Overheating with certain programs

Hi jennie,
One of the most common problems with older & a lot of newer notebooks has been battery's over heat & the system shuts down. I suggest you remove the battery & run off the AC power cord. Run the programs you mentioned & see if the notebook shuts down. This is only a test.
Packard Bell has a site where it can Diagnosis & Repair some problems loacated at this link. Try it.

Troubleshooting

Try taking the battery out and keeping it plugged in when you try to turn it on.  If it turns on then you need to replace the battery.  Otherwise, it is most likely the power supply (which on laptops is usually a part of the motherboard).
