Question about Computers & Internet

1 Answer

My laptop will just shut off, like when the power goes out and your television turns off. It happens usually when I am listening to music on internet radio, but it'll also happen randomly when I'm not necessarily running anything too taxing. My friend said it may be something with the motherboard, the laptop is approximately 3.5 years old, has anti-virus software and is routinely checked for viruses and whatnot.

The laptop could be over-heating, or if your running it on battery only the battery may be faulty or not charged enough. Even when windows says a battery is full, its not always correct.

An easy way to see if it might be software is to boot to a bootable cd and let the computer sit for a while.

It could also be your ram, or other failing device. Best thing would be to have it checked out by a professional.

To connect a music player or other audio device to your laptop
If your laptop has a line-in jack, follow the instructions above for connecting a music player to a desktop computer. But to connect a music player or other audio device to most laptops, you'll have to plug it into a microphone jack. To do so, follow these steps:

Click to open Sound.

Click the Recording tab, click Microphone, and then click Properties.

Click the Listen tab, click the Listen to this device check box, and then click Apply.

Click the Levels tab and make sure the Mute button looks like this . If the button looks like this , click it to turn on sound for this connection, and then click Apply.

Play some music or other sounds on your device to test the volume coming through your computer speakers. Select the slider under Microphone, drag it right or left to increase or decrease the volume of your audio device, and then click OK. You might also want to adjust the volume on your device.

Note
If you hear noise coming out of your speakers, try reducing the volume on both the music player and in the Levels tab. The microphone jack is designed to receive sound from a microphone, which is different than sound coming from a music player

You might have put the computer into hibernate; have you tried pressing the power button? It should wake the computer up if it is asleep or hibernating. It is also possible that your monitor cable is unplugged.

Will it harm my laptop to listen to music on it every night all night?

No, it will not harm your laptop, it might harm your ears if you listen to it too loud through headphones. The only possible damage could occur if you listen through the laptops speakers, too loud and constant would adversly wear out the speakers.

I have a Dell 2400 it starts up fine but after about ten minutes the light turns from green to yellow and I lose any picture it reminds me of a sleep or hibernation mode but I know it does not have that....

Is this light on the computer, or on the monitor?

I suspect that it happens when you try to watch a movie or listen to music - something that doesn't involve typing on the keyboard or using the mouse? If so, then your computer goes to suspend mode. You have to open the Control Panel, Power settings, and select an "Always on" power scheme, and additionally change the "monitor off" option to Never. Then click "Apply", close the window and you should be fine.

CD drive trying to play CD when drive is empty

Apparently your laptop still thinks there is a cd to play. Be sure you closed down all your programs. I am assuming that you already logged off and shut your computer down and restarted. It could be something as simple as your sensor that detects the cd being in place and just a little dust. Use some clean compressed air that comes in a can and can be bought like at Radio Shack or electronic supply house. Put the nozzle on and blow out any dust that may be in there. Power down and then restart your computer. That should take care of your problem.
