They will have the lightscribe logo on them if they are compatible. They need to have a special ink embedded on the lable side.

My computer does not recognize my hp 557s as a lightscribe compatible device

Hi professa31!
Have you tried installing the Lightscribe software bundle? Their website says that it's required for operation of any lightscribe device. Here's the link: http://www.lightscribe.com/downloadsection/windows/index.aspx?id=810
Also, it appears that there are a bunch of reasons why it may not be detected, most of which are not bad at all. Here (http://www.lightscribe.com/support/index.aspx?id=401) is a list of a few reasons, from the lightscribe website.
Good luck!

Try reading a disc from it. If that won't work, your drive is dead. Try upgrading your drivers, or upgrading the lightscribe software.

I don't know how to copy the item from a DVD and burn to another DVD. Would you explain? Then, How do I write on the DVD? it's light scribe.

I'd like to suggest information directly from the manufacturer of LightScribe - HP,
(Don't forget to use HP LightScribe disks. They are the only ones you can use to burn to, and use the label marking feature)

Hello i have a lightscribe asus drw-2014L 1T disc drive it will not burn onto lightscribe discs but ok on normal printable & dvd-rw discs can u help me with the problem

The LightScribe feature of DVD burners with this capability requires that you are using burner software that has this function. Verify that the software you are using is lightscribe compatible. The software that comes with this drive(Nero) should be lightscribe compatible. After you burn the disc you do need to fip the disc over and the re-insert into the drive so that a label can be etched into the disc. The lightscribe discs look identical on both sides so only one side you can burn info and the other side is for the label so make sure that it is inserted on the right side for each process. If you put the disc in on the wrong side the initial data burn will not work. Also sometimes burners will have issues with certain brands of discs so you may also want to try a different brand and see if that helps. And another thing that you can try is updating the drive to the latest firmware. The firmware is to the drive kind of like what Windows is to your PC. Sometimes updating this file will fix problems like this. Here is a link to the firmware of your model. http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us

You can download the file and run it to update your firmware. Caution: Before running the firmware make sure it is the correct file for your drive! There are a couple of variations to your model number and this one might not be the correct one. If you install the wrong file you could damage your drive inoperable or defeat some of it's features. I hope this information is of help with your problem and thanks for using FixYa.

I've installed my lightscribe dvd/cd burner the only disc that came with it was nero 7 essentials i installed that but i cant get it to run the lightscribe when i put the disc in on the side to burn a cd...

You need to use a disk made for Lightscribe. Lightscribe technology was developed by HP.

Look at your local store that handles CD's, and DVD's, and look for the Lightscribe disks.
