Sony kp53v80 Red convergence stuck vertically

Used your advise to try and fix my red convergence issue. I can adjust all colors both vertically and horizontally except RED...my problem. Can adjust it horizontally but not vertically. And vertically is where my big problem is. It's way...way off. Happened overnight. Is there a part I can replace myself or solder to fix this myself? Old TV but love it. Any advice would he helpful. Thanks so much, Lou

Gonna take a look inside today. Have 2 small kids so getting free time is hard!!! Are there 2 convergence IC's for each color? I'm assuming without looking that there is one for the vert and one for the horizontal for each color. Also assuming without looking that the pico fuses you mention would be close to the IC. Reading I found that the IC is part: STK-392-040. Will have a look soon. Thanks for your quick reply. Have basic electric understanding but may have problems identifying the parts you mention. I read the pico fuse in "orange" and marked "Fxxx" Assuming something blew based on the fact that the vert will not adjust at all. Thanks again, any additional info would help as far as location of the resistors you mention......thanks again..Lou

  • LouB747 Jul 28, 2008

Yes, saw the 392-150. Thanks for the link. Can't find the 2.2 1/2 watt resistors. They have 2.2 1 watt. Will those work? Looks like I'll have to pull the board for the soldering. Hope it's not too hard to take out/put in....Thanks again. Will order the parts after I hear from you......Really appreciate your help..Lou

How do I remove these wires so I can solder??

  • LouB747 Aug 05, 2008

After awhile labeling all the wires, I got the board out. Soldered in new parts. TV works great!!!! As if new. I can't thank you enough.........Lou

Did you replace the convergence ICs? The 4.7 ohm 1/2wwatt resistors and the pico fuses? Let me know and I will assist you, as often sonys will blow the 3.5 pico and a few of the 4.7 ohm 1/2watt resistors when the Ics fail.

If your model number is the KP53V80 your model uses two STK392-150 convergence Ics twelve 2.2 ohm 1/2watt resistors and six 2.0Amp pico fuses. Those are the items most likely needing replacement. You can get replacement parts at the following link with free instalation instructions with free tech support. Here is the link.

They dont list all the resistors they have, but if you order the 2.2 ohm 1 watt leave them a comment that you want the 1/2watt instead of the 1watt, Or you can email them when they send you an order confirmation. They will help you get the board out as well> Just ask them and they will send the instructions with illustrations to get your board out. They are a good site , they go the distance to help you repair your set.

Unhook the large one from the other end at the HV splitter and the small one also disconnect at the other end which is the focus screen control

Hello i have a sony KP-46WT510 model 45" TV, and

Below are two of the most common problems encountered with projection TV sets.

Problem #1 - CONVERGENCE PROBLEM

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on Projection TV sets and a fairly simple DIY fix.

Common Symptoms include....
  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on - TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some photos of convergence problems.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the settings menu then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move RED and BLUE in all directions - up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions or cant move them far enough your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

Note: If you TV has as flash focus or magic focus button only try pressing the button. If it fails to fix the convergence your need to fix it. See below for a solution

47a7bc4.pngCONVERGENCE SOLUTION

You will need to replace the convergence chips and possibly some convergence resistors and pico fuses.

This is a a fairly easy DIY job if you know what you are doing. If you have never done this before we would advise calling a shop or if you want to do it yourself get a complete kit with instructions and support from TvRepairKits.com

Their kits include a step by step instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, thermal paste, email/phone support, etc.

Problem #2 CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around video.

Pic of a set that needs the fluid changed. Notice how dull the colors are and how white the screen looks. The screen may also look red, orange, dull, etc.

Set after fluid change. Notice how bright the colors are now. Everthing looks crisp and sharp again.

My picture is doubled on my toshiba TN50V71 as if there is a shadow behind everything? Please help!

hi, sounds like a convergence issue. try this...
  • Look through your manual. Your manual will always give you the most specific directions for your particular model. Look for an "adjusting convergence" or "set manual convergence" section.

  • Enter the menu on your TV. Use the remote control and bring up the menu.
  • Choose "Convergence." This may be under "Picture Settings," "Function" or "Advanced Options."
  • Select a color. You will have red, green and blue to choose from. Do each one, starting with red.
  • Press "Enter." A crosshair pattern will appear on your screen.
  • Adjust vertically. If there is a horizontal red line visible, press the up or down arrow keys (or channel up or down) to adjust the convergence until the line is superimposed on the horizontal-center line of the white crosshair.
  • Adjust horizontally. If there is a vertical red line visible, press left or right (or volume up or down) to adjust horizontally. Do this until the line is superimposed on the vertical line of the white crosshair.
  • Save settings. It is important to save your settings when you are done, instead of simply exiting the menu.
  • Repeat these steps for all colors.
    good luck!
