Question about PC Desktops

I have a 2002 Dell optiplex computer with windows xp. I want to get a samsung 19" wide screen monitor. Someone told me that it probably would not plug and go as old computers need software and adjustment to get a wide screen to work. He said to get a rectangular picture. Is this true, as i have seen a samsung that I would really like to get?

To adjust with a high resolution monitor the graphics should also support it.but u can use the samsung 19" monitor with a less screen resolution.

Practically all monitors have the necessary drivers to accomadate what you are trying to achieve.Just plug in and go.If your present PC does not have the drivers in its database windows will download it from the web or you yourself can do so.

For Windows XP drivers, the last supported through Dell, try one of the three listed here:
http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19/product/optiplex-sx280

Change the Operating System to "MS Windows XP" and the Category to "Video".

This discussion suggests that Windows Update will get you working drivers after a Windows 7 install:

Problem on Dell OptiPlex 780 Desktop

You are going to need to start your computer in safe mode and find the XP drivers that will work for your motherboard manually from the web (Assuming that there are any created for XP for that board)..

That blue screen you keep getting is because you don't have the correct driver loaded for something on the motherboard that it needs to boot correctly and your XP install couldn't find it on the web to install automatically.

Start your PC and press F8 several times until the boot menu comes up. Then select "Safe Mode with Networking".

Now start looking for your drivers here:

Are Dell monitors not compatible with older HP Pavilion Computer? I tried to connect my HP CPU to a Dell monitor and it will not recognize it at all.

It shouldn't make any difference which monitor you are connecting to any computer. In fact, I am running a 19" HP Flat Panel on my Dell Dimension 2400 right now. It is NOT a wide screen monitor as the Dell built in graphics card will not support the RESOLUTION RATIO required for the wide screen. Check what setting is "native resolution" for your monitor and see if your graphics card will support it. If not, using your old monitor, try different resolution settings. Right click on your desk top, click on properties and that should bring up the display properties box. Try a lower setting as larger settings are the ones that will give you a black screen. It will probably give you a smaller picture on your old monitor, or perhaps smaller or larger icons on the desk top. Accept the new settings, turn off your computer and switch monitors, and turn your computer back on. If you get a picture, but it does not fill the whole screen or the icons seem too large or small, then go back into properties from the desktop and try a different resolution ratio until the picture seems correct.

Monitor compatibility

It will be compatible with the system, just keep on thing in mind, whatever resolution you set your computer at you may have to keep the ratio aspect active so that way the screen looks properly displayed.

Screen Wiggles, CPU Shuts Self Off, Powers Up Very Slowly

Hmm... Any errors on the screen?

Could be a power supply. Fluctuations in that can cause power drops, which would be visible in the video card, and if severe enough, cause the PC to shut off. There are 4 screws and one 1 wire holding those in. It would take about 10 minutes to replace and probably cost you $40-$50 in parts.

To have Geeks do it: Probably $100.
