Reasons a sata device might not be recognized in BIOS:
(1)Serial ATA disabled, enter bios and enable SATA.
(2)Serial ATA cable defective
(3)Serial ATA drive defective
(4)Serial ATA cable defective
(5)Serial ATA device not plugged into power.
(6)Serial ATA power adapter defective.
I would advise the following:
(1) Verify that the sata drive and cable you are using work in another system, if possible.
(2) Verify that your power supply is not the issue.
(3) Use the jumper near the battery on the motherboard to clear the CMOS.
(4) Update bios to the most recent version available from HP.
(5) Remove hardware that is not required to power on the system and get display.
If the SATA port(s) are enabled in bios, the power is good, cable is good, device is good, cmos has been cleared, bios updated, unnecessary hardware removed, and the system will still not recognize a SATA device in BIOS, the motherboard is bad.
