Question about Goodman CLQ36AR49 Air Conditioner

Air conditioning unit

My air conditioning unit is about 5 years old inside and out. 3 years ago the outside unit stopped working, compressor was replaced. Now when it gets hot in the afternoon it shuts off and will not come back on until unit has cooled down. A/C guys have switched fan motor, but still does it. Then wires burnt out when overloaded, had it fixed, then wires burn out again and cause a hole in a pipe outside, all freeon lost. Hole fixed freeon reloaded, shuts off again, why can these a/c guys not figure out the problem? I have not cleaned the coils in attic since having new unit as there is no door to get in there, could this be the problem, or do I need a new compressor (5 year warranty is about to expire)? HELP - thanks

Thank you, my a/c guy is coming round today to install a hard start kit. Does this make sense?

No. A hard start kit is exactly that, an extra capacitor with increased voltage TO ASSIST IN THE START UP of the compressor. It has absolutely nothing to do with a compressor overheating!

Only 1 answer above is a good answer!(Thomas) My opinion! Goodman will not replace the entire unit. No manufacturer will do this except in the first 30 days after installation. Inside that unit is/should be a factory installed filter drier. I'm betting whoever changed the compressor, didn't change that drier. If not, it's restricted and causing the compressor trouble. Please, have another experienced professional out for service. Have all your previous invoices available. I'm a sole proprietor, meaning I own and run my own company, and from my experience here in Texas, most company owners do a wonderful job for the customer. More than half of the "employees" I've worked with in the past, are either inexperienced, or have a DONT CARE attitude about what they do. When you call, ask for the owner/operator to show up. Ask for someone with 15+ years experience. OR, call a local HVAC supply parts house and ask for a recommendation on a qualified sole individual. You can also check with the local state licencing regulation department, using their license number, and verify that this company has a good reputation, and not many complaints filed against them. Also with the better business bureau, to try to get them to make it right, though a second opinion is the route I would take first.

As stated you need a second opinion. I don't believe your compressor is bad, I think your system is either overcharged has a failing expansion valve. Get a different company out there and request their most experienced tech and explain to them the history of the system. There is an underlying issue in what I believe to be your refrigeration circuit. Possibly overcharged due to static or the duct size, hard to say without servicing the unit myself.

I'm sorry that you're having all those problems. that would be frustrating, especially during the warmer months. I think if you've spent so much on getting it repaired, you may want to consider getting a new one installed. It would help to do some research to see which company would be your best option for installing and maintaining it. Try asking around for recommendations and see what your friends and family have to say about their A/C unit brands and installation services. http://www.washamplumbing.com

Hi! AC Unit
Sorry you have had so much trouble. Sounds like with the factory warranty being in effect the whole outside condensing unit should be replaced. With this type of problem there could be some blockage in the AC lines. With out some pressure reading it is hard to tell if the expansion tube is plugged, or there is some other major problem. If your service tech is unable to diagnose the problem you may need to get a third opinion. Goodman may have a factory representative in your area. You may be able to find some help with a different dealer or online. Good Luck! I will try and look for any changes.

Brand New 2 weeks old 4 ton Trane compressor leaks a lot of water onto pad

If the unit is running in cold weather than there is ice building up on the coils located outside. This is normal in that the unit is running in heat pump mode heating inside and cooling outside, After the unit detects the ice build up it briefly reverses the cycle heating the outside coils melting(defrosting) the ice which you observe as water on the pad.

The video gives you an example of the defrost cycle!

I have a Carrier Weathermaker model #38tdb060300 A/C system. How many tons is that? It is 11 yrs old, capacitor exploded and compressor is blown. Needing to replace.

Looks like a 5 ton unit. However, you might be better off finding a R-22 condensing unit to replace the entire outside unit. Reason being, if you just replace the compressor, you get a one year warranty. If you replace the whole outside unit, you get a 5 year warranty. You can replace the outside unit with any manufacturer, as long as it is the same tonnage and type (heat pump/air conditioner/single stage/ 2 stage ...).

My 4 year old Ruud home a/c compressor stopped working. inside fan blows but compressor won't turn on...what can I do prior to calling the gas company who installed the unit...

Ruud parts warranty from factory is 5 years, the capacitor has possible gone out, it will be in the contol compartment on the out side unit and is a dual run capacitor that controls the compressor and fan motor. Recommend if capacitor is bad to replace entire capacitor. As Stated above the parts are under warranty if under five years old. To verify age the date code is in the serial number after the "F" **** week/year of manufacture. Also outside unit has independent power supply so check fuses if any and circuit breaker.

Air condition jsut 10 month old ... not keeping up whith cooling

If it's only 92° outside and the unit won't cool the house, then the unit is either to small or it's low on refrigerant. They are designed to cool a house with outdoor temperatures up to 115° to 120°.Usually you need one ton a/c for every 400 square feet of house, but, you have to take into account for average outdoor temperature and humidity, windows, doors, especially sliding glass or patio doors and which side of the house they are on, insulation in walls and attic.
The air leaving your duct work going into the rooms should be about 20° lower than the room temperature, if you have a 80° room then the air leaving the duct should be around 60°. if it is then the unit is probably to small if, everything is working properly.

If both fans runs (inside and outside), check if the compresor runs , if does probably the unit is low in freon and needs to be recharged after the freon leak has been fixed (remember this is a seal system and it shouldn't leak), but if the compressor doesn't work , it could be the capacitor , the pressure switch (if it's low on freon ) or the compreessor itself. But befor do anything ,if you have a digital thermostat replce the batteries.

New outside compressor 4 ton Ruud 13 seer unit.

Sounds like a compressor needs to be replaced. You will need a service tech to make sure of it. Sometimes the compressor can work for a long time that way. Check your warranty. Usually compressors will have longer warranty on it.

New Goodman condenser unit run almost contiously using too much e

I'm not sure of the kilowatts. The 10 min on and 5 off is telling me there is to much heat by the thermostat or you house needs more insulation. The new compressor is designed for more efficient run time. The other thing is the unit to big for your house? It should run 10 -15 min when low humidity is in the house. Otherwise longer if its pretty warm inside.

Compressor valve failure

That is not correct. The system is not mis-matched. They just put a heavy condensor outside to get more air volume for your house. The failure of the valve is not to common of a failure but can and will fail. The problem with Palm Springs is the weather you get there, From very hot to very windy with sand storms to freezing rain and sometimes snow depending on where you are. What is the tech wanting to cahrge to replace the valve? Also this is something that should have been looked at closey and examined before the home was bought and that should have been known by the realator
