Question about Sony KDF46E2000 46" Projection HDTV
I've seen this exact problem before and it was the lamp. Take it out (if in doubt) and look for glass fragments in the reflector. Even if the glass capsule isn't shattered, the bulb can still be bad. This is the easiest failure to visually confirm. A lamp should last between 2 to 3 years depending on the amount of daily use the TV gets. Should a bulb last less than two years the lamp cooling fans may need cleaned. Homes with a dust problem, smokers, pets and open windows are more prone to dust accumulation inside the TV. If you take the lamp out and see dust bunnies inside the lamp housing, the set should be cleaned and fans checked for dust deposits. Every six months or sooner vacuum the rear cover panel and area behind the entertainment furniture.
