GE GTH18KBM Refrigerator, top freezer ice-over trouble

We have had this appliance for 6 years. First it started leaking water onto the top shelf of refrigerator. Now, the freezer builds up ice on the coils, and the drain freezes up completely. The cold air can't reach the refigerator section, so the temp of the refrigerator rises. I have to take the back off, and manually defrost about every month. I also hear a "clunking" sound occasionally, like ice is dropping. We don't have an ice maker.

It sounds like there is an issue with the drain tube from the freezer to the compressor pan. If it is open at the bottom then it will allow warm moist air to form an ice plug in the tube which will not allow water to flow out during a defrost, this will gradually build up then stop the freezer from functioning normally. This will be shown by large formation of clear solid/layered ice. Alternately if it is plugged with some foreign object then it will end up doing the same thing. The next time you do a defrost verify that there is water coming out to the pan at the compressor if not the tube will have to be cleared. The best way is compressed air but not too much since this is just a plastic tube. the obstruction should be blown out the top.

There should be a small trap on the bottom of the drain tube kind of like the one under the kitchen sink if it is not there then you will have to either make one or get one from your local parts dealer.

Started leaking water accumulated on bottom shelf in lower level. now top freezer takes 2 days to freeze ice, bottom freezer vent clogged.

The drain is clogged. When the drain clogs it can also clogs the airflow vents. Remove the back wall of the freezer to access the drain. Remove all the ice blocking the drain and the vents. Then use a trukey baser to force hot water down the drain until water flows freely. Then mix water with baken soda and pour it down the drain. http://www.appliance-repair-it.com/refrigerator-leaking.html

The drain is clogged. Remove the bottom bin out of the freezer. Once done you should see a trough at the back. This trough will be filled with ice, remvoe the ice. Then you have to clear the drain. The best way I know of to do this is to force hot water down the drain with a turkey baser untill water flows freely. Whirlpool, water puddles on top shelf of fridge

If it is not from a plugged or misaligned defrost drain tube, then it is always from air leaking into your refer section. Check you door gasket to see if it is sealing correctly all around your door. Make sure your door is shutting tightly every time. Good Luck, Appliance Specialists.

Water dripping from freezer onto top shelf of fridge with ice buildup back of freezer

the defroster isn't close enough to the drain to be effective. remove the back wall of the inside of the freezer, remove the excess ice. clear out the ice from the drain using hot water and a turkey baster. there is a kit from whirlpool that uses a piece of metal and a screw around the defrost rod, but I found out that a piece of 14 gauge solid core wire with the insulation stripped off works great too. stick the stripped wire into the drain, 2 to 3 inches, and wrap the rest around the defrost rod.

Refridgerator Leaks

I can't find this model number anywhere and am unfamiliar with the "Evolution" series. However, if it is a top/bottom unit (freezer on top, fridge on bottom) it sounds like you have a clogged drain.

If you pull the back panel off inside of the freezer (where the evaporator is housed) you will see a drain hole, usually in the rear center) that is probably full of ice. If this drain is plugged, it will cause the water to back up into the refrigerator, usually onto the top shelf or under the veggie bins, and possibly onto the floor.

You need to clear it out, and make sure that water flows through it freely, to the pan underneath the unit. The best way to do this is with a hair dryer and a copper wire, but be careful not to melt the inside of the freezer with it. When it's clear, you might want to take a hose and blow through it to make sure there's nothing trapped inside.

Please let me know if you need any further help with this issue.
