Star filters would do that, if I get what you are asking. They make them with different amounts of 'points' 4,6, and 8 are common.

My candle flame is burning too high and letting out a lot of smoke. What can I do about it?

If your candle is smoking or blowing too high, then blow it out and when it has cooled down, you can trim the wick and then try again.

What is candle gel wax?

Gel wax is mineral oil (hydrocarbon) that has been thickened. It burns a lot slower than traditional wax and looks clear so it is visually quite flexible.

We bought new Dimplex baseboard heaters when we re-did all of our rooms and the new heaters are leaving black marks (like smoke damage) on the wall above the heaters. Our walls are ruined

Stop burning candles! Yes, believe it or not the black is smoke from candles which is deposited there by/because of air flow. How did I know you burn candles? Been in the HVAC business a long time and that is the only thing I've ever seen cause it!

Tv screen constantly has a film on the screen surface

Televisions typically electrostatically attract dust and particles in the air -- it's unavoidable. If you do a lot of cooking (particularly fried foods) near the room where your tv is, it could be that it is attracting grease etc from the air...or, if there are smokers in your house or you burn a lot of candles, it could be residue from the smoke or candles.

(By the way, did you know that beeswax candles are the cleanest burning candles you can buy?)

Hope this helps!

I'm planning to buy a DSLR but confused what to buy

You have named several excellent digital SLR cameras aimed at the top end of the amateur/semi professional market.
I have the Nikon D200 and have been very pleased with it.
As stated by JCDill, you must really decide what you want and can afford. The camera body you choose will commit you down one path or another. For example, if you choose Canon, only Canon or OEM (Other Equipment Manufacturers) such as Sigma lenses will fit your camera body. Canon have a good reputation for their auto-focus, while Nikon make lenses that are the envy of others.
If this is your first digital SLR then you might be best buying an entry level body with a multi-purpose zoom lens such as the Nikon D40. There is a lot to learn.
If you are converting from film SLR and already have a set of lenses, then the cameras you mentioned will probably be able to use your existing lenses (but this is less so with Canon than Nikon). I was ecstatic to disover that my old Nikon 500mm mirror lens works in manual mode (with metering displayed) on my Nikon D200 but would not work properly on my Nikon D70.
I hope this helps.

"for" message on LCD

It means you need to format your compact flash card. may be that you've been bitten by the infamous BGLD problem (Blinking Green Light of Death) that caused my D70 to eventually be replaced by Nikon.  Thankfully it was under warranty at the point, which yours will not be.
If you haven't ever formatted your card, this is probably the problem.  To do so, just hold the two buttons that say "for" in red on them down for a second so that the letters "FOR" start to blink, then do it again while seeing that.  Let go and wait a couple of seconds.  The FOR will be replaced by numbers that tell you how many images you have left on the card until it is full.  I format my cards EVERY time I put a card back in the camera.  This prevents bad locations from cropping up on the card and creating bad images (corrupt).

Vivitar 636 and Nikon D200

You won't be able to use older TTL flashguns with the D200. Since the D70, all nikon cameras have used "iTTL", and earlier DSLRs (eg D100) have used "D-TTL". Neither of these are compatible with the older TTL system used on film cameras. The newer SB-400/600/800 flashguns are all ok, and Sigma and Metz both produce iTTL compatible flashguns. The new flashguns will work on old cameras but not vice versa.

I know this is annoying, but there were good technical reasons why Nikon changed the TTL standards.

If the 636 has an A mode (non TTL) this should work ok, otherwise it will only work in manual (if it has a manual mode).
