Canon MP390 Printing no magenta & now nothing!

Hi all,

HELP! Basically the printer was fine and then it started to not print magenta - so no even colours and no blue. We messed about and got it abit better and tried ot clean the printhead better. On advice of canon we ordered a new printhead (obvioulsy they want you to get an engineer out but for 95 pounds i dont think so) - so have just installed the new printhead...did the alignment and tried it out and absolutely nothing is printed out at all! Not even black whic I had before i changed the printhead. I then did a couple of deep cleans and normal cleans and checked the laignment etc and the cartridges were ok...nothing out of place and still nothing.
Does anybody have ANY ideas? So frustrated as I dont have the manual either - cant find it for free on canon website and dont want to pay for it again. PLEASE help - iM way behind on paperwork and really need help...

Hi wont believe but ive got the printer to not only print black again but also colour! and the solution was as easy as this (i still cant believe it!)...take the printhead out wih the cartridges still in. Get a load of tissue or old towel and wrap around the bottom of the printhead - try not touch the green bit...then blow - yeas BLOW thorugh the tiny holes in the top of the cartridges...I did this - was getting annoyed and lightheaded...and then suddenly a splat of black ink...then a splat of colour in - dab it so its not messy - put the ink head back into the printer and re-align...then try do a nozzle test too. Im sooooooooooooooooooooo stoked - this really worked after missioining for 2-3 weeks now and also replacing the printhead etc...lets hope it stays this waay and hope this helps you all too!

Hey Everyone!

I have an MP390 that had a similar problem over a year ago. There is a very simple fix that worked for me, and I'm pretty sure that it will work for you too. :^)

Open the printer as though you were going to replace the ink tanks. Once opened, with the print head centered, open the latch and remove all of the ink tanks. Gently remove the print head (it should come right out, even easier than the ink cartridges). Take a paper towel, wet it with warm water, and then gently clean the bottom part of the print head. The bottom part is the part that will have an orange ribbon running to four metal openings that look like tiny nozzles. After wiping away all of the built-up gunk (on mine there was a thick sludge), grab a new and wet paper towel, and lightly press it against the nozzles. This should start sucking ink through the print head, and you will begin to see four distinct colors (CMYK) bleeding into the towel. Once done, lightly dry the print head off (make sure that there are no loose water droplets) and then reassemble everything. Print a test page and everything should work. If it doesn't change the ink tanks just to be sure.

Fortunately for you, Canon has made the print head on the MP390 very easy to service/remove, so cleaning is a snap.

  1. Turn Printer On
  2. Open Printer As If To Change Ink Tanks
  3. Release Ink Tank Latch
  4. Remove Ink Tanks
  5. Remove Print Head (Black Plastic Assembly In Which Ink Tanks Rest)
  6. Use Wet Paper Towel (With Warm Water) To Clean Tank/Nozzle
  7. Dry Excess Water
  8. Reassemble
  9. Close Printer
  10. Print Test Page

Good luck!!!

Thanks a lot for the above help. I want to add my 2 cents. I got an air duster (probably dont have smiler2's lungs) - it is well worth it coz my magenta kept coming out with ink as I used the air duster but not the other 2 colors, finally after an hour of air dusting, the magenta cleaned up and now all color print.

For whatever reason dont use the air duster on the head side, this will screw you up, always use it where the ink cartridges are held.

I'm having a problem with the ink magenta on an IP4500 Canon Printer, it's not printing any magenta even with new cartridges and I've done all the maintenance checks!! Help!

there are small metal spring contacts between the cartridge holder and the cartridge itself, these send the signals to the print head via the cartridge holder. Over time, as a print cartridge moves from side to side during printing these flatten out and no longer come into contact with the cartridge. Find the contacts behind your magenta colour cartridge and re-tension the spring metal contacts so they once again contact the metal faces on the cartridge. They maybe hard to find as they will be in the place where the cartridge goes, use the flat copper faces on the cartridge to give you a clue as to the position of the contacts in the holder.

Magents prints in thin, almost non-existent threadlike lines

I'm sorry you got that advice to reset your counter, your joy will be gone again when the ink starts leaking out of your printer and the more you clean the more ink will go to the already full absorber. Your paper advance will stop first when ink covers the encoder wheel for the main roller drive. The best you should do now is to have the ink absorber replaced, and get a new printhead to resolve your printing problems. If you really like this printer you should spend a few bucks to fix it right and keep it working much longer...
