Question about Carrier Air Conditioners

1 Answer

I have a Carrier 8000 weathermaker. Recently the blower motor began to run progressively slower and finally just bogged down. I replaced the motor, but the replacement motor has three speeds (red, blue and black wires) whereas the old motor had four (red, blue, black and yellow). Initially I hooked the new motor wires up to the circuit board the same way the old ones were, leaving an open spot where the old yellow wire was. New motor works, but at lower speeds, pushing less cool air. We live in Tucson so the unit's running all day and still has trouble maintaining temperature. I set it at 78 and the house temp will creep up to 84 by the heat of the day, and cool back down at night. This wasn't a problem before I changed out the motor. A mechanic at the store where I bought the new motor suggested I shift the wires up one spot each to get the higher blower speed the old motor had. I tried that with no change. I've changed air filters but have yet to have the freon level checked. Also, I didn't buy a new capacitor to go with the new motor as is sometimes recommended. Could that be the problem? Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Found system was slowly loosing coolant through a variety of miniscule leaks in rusting part of condenser. Apparently coolant level had dropped sufficiently in the blower repair interval to where the system no longer functioned with adequate efficiency. Bottom line - low coolant level as is the first suggestion in most related ac repair forum sites. I'm buying a Trane, this system is no longer economically feasible to maintain.

If you can get to the shaft of the motor, oil it using electric motor oil. If the motor spins freely, you just may need to replace the start capacitor, however if it is binding; you will need to replace the inducer as an assembly.

My Carrier Weathermaker 8000 makes a screeching sound when it first starts but quits screeching about 45 seconds later. I turned the heat down today and it quit about 2 seconds after. The blower still...

Hi,
the screech is probably the condenser or exhaust fan as you guessed. And yes, a decent handi-man can fix it. Check the horsepower, RPMs,rotation, shaft size, and frame # of motor and order a new one from www.grainger.com or a local carrier dealer.
Install the new motor exactly as the old one was and wire according to the motor literature or the graphic on the side of the motor.
Use care when removming the old fan blade. a good file on the shaft and some WD-40 makes the job easier. Also a bit of patience... :-)

I hope that this will help you to solve your problem!

Thanks for using Fixya!!

BLOWER NOISE

Could be a loose blower wheel. It has slipped and touching the sides of the blower housing.
Turn off the power to the nit.
Remove the 2 bolts holding the blower in place.
Make yourself a wiring schematic.
Remove the wires.
Be careful not to touch the capacitor.
Remove the blower housing.
Clean the blower blades.
Spin the wheel to see where it is hitting.
Loosen the set screw on the motor shaft and adjust your blower wheel.

How do i locate and replace the blower motor on # 58ZAV096

not sure if you have fixed the problem. There is a web site to get this motor... www.arnoldservice .com he should have the motor. I recomend a generic 3 speed mtr. you will have to cut the plug on the original as it may be a 4 speed but you only need 3 speeds. The oem motor will be more expensive then an aftermarket.

Your blower motor may have failed. Check the blower motor for the air circulation and you may find it is hot but not running. Have the motor replaced if this is the case.
