The following advice is for replacing the “Agitator Dogs” on Kenmore and Whirlpool TOP LOADER style washing machines. This simple repair can save you a fortune in repair costs as the replacement parts are very inexpensive at a cost of less than $10. The replacement kit part number is 80040. You can order on line at various appliance parts websites, or use this part number and go to your nearest appliance parts retailer.

What are “Agitator Dogs”? These are small plastic pieces (usually 4) that are located under the agitator center cap that grip the agitator and turn it during the wash cycle. They can (and do) wear out dependent upon the use of the washer. If you are in the habit of doing large load sizes frequently, or wash large items such blankets or afghans, this can wear the teeth off and reduce the life of the agitator dogs.

SYMPTOMS REQURING REPLACEMENT: The agitator fails to turn during the wash cycle, or will not turn with a heavy load. The timer will run normally through all cycles, and you will be able to hear the gearcase (transmission) engage and run. The washer will also drain normally. The only indication that something is wrong will be the agitator slipping or not turning at all. The result will be clothes that do not wash properly and will sit on the bottom of the wash tub.

To replace the Agitator Dogs, follow these steps:

  1. Remove the agitator center cap by either pulling straight up or gently placing a flat blade screwdriver into a slot located in the cap.
  2. If the agitator is equipped with an inner cap with a handle, remove this as well by pulling straight up.
  3. Remove the center bolt of the agitator. You will have either a 7/16” hex bolt or a recessed square plastic nut. If you have the square recessed type, use a 3/8” to ½” ratchet adapter to remove.
  4. Remove the agitator by grasping the bottom flange and carefully pulling straight up. Try to keep all the parts assembled while doing this, so do not pull too hard. This will make this repair much easier.
  5. Place your hand over the top of the agitator and separate the upper portion of the agitator from the lower portion and turn the top half over in your hand. The agitator dog assembly will come out in your hand.
  6. With the agitator dog assembly in your hand, lay the rest of the agitator aside. Pay careful attention to how the dogs are installed. Remove the worn dogs and reinstall new ones. It’s that simple.
  7. With all the dogs replaced and the assembly still in your hand, place the upper part of the agitator over the top of it, upside down, ensuring the inner assembly tabs align correctly.
  8. Now keep your hand over the agitator top to hold all the pieces together and turn the entire assembly over (upright position).
  9. Carefully align and reinsert the upper portion of the agitator to the lower portion. Again, making sure the two pieces align correctly.
  10. Place the entire agitator assembly back on the gearcase shaft and reinstall center nut. NOTE: DO NOT over tighten the nut, or the agitator will not spin correctly. Just make the nut snug. Reinstall center cap and inner cap (if equipped).

These instructions should give you the basics on how to perform this repair. Since there are various agitator types in use by Whirlpool and Kenmore, assembly can vary. If you get confused and require further assistance, please refer to my profile at http://www.fixya.com/users/jsrock516 and use the “Ask Me” feature. For excellent diagrams to assist in reassembly you can also refer to the searspartsdirect.com website. Just type in your COMPLETE washer model number and look under the Agitator Parts heading. I hope this information is found to be helpful.

WTW600sw2 change keeps going into drain pump. Is there a way to adjust the drum seal to prevent this?

There is no adjustment. There may b e coins still stuck in your filter that might make their way to the pump. To clear it out, you have to remove the basket from the tub. The filter will be in the back center of the tub. Remove the 2 screws and clean it out.

Where is the location of drain pump

With alot of front loaders, you have to nearly tear apart the entire machine to get to the pump! You're better off having a repairman do the work for you.

Where i can find the drain pump for kenmore front loader

Front loader washing machines are difficult to reach (drain pump wise). You have to nearly tear the entire machine apart just to get to them.

How to take apart will not spin out the water

I don't know your particular washer, however, have had some experience with a couple of others. I found that something got caught in the flow line to the pump (in this case one of the plastic clips that holds a bread bag closed). I tipped the washer on its side and removed the pump so I could find the blockage. The location of the pump/outlet hose will be differrent on all washers and models, however, with it tipped over or with the front or possibly the back removed it should be able to be located.

F-21 error

Hi, unplug from power source...remove front lower panel (3 sheet metal screw wirh 1/4" drive head located on the lower lop of the panel)...open pump strainer (looks like a large stove knob, Turn it counter clokwise, lookout! lots of water will gush out... back flush the pump by filling the outet of the drain hose ( this may dislodge debris that may jam your pump)...re-assemble, plug to power, and turn-on. In my case, there was a piece of a pencil lodge in the pump impeller. I had to disassemble the pump. it can be done if you are patient and able to figure out how the plastic thing come apart. Good luck! If all else call the pros!

What is a f-21 error

Hi,
The Error Code F-21 is a slow or long drain. Most likley cause is a plugged up pump filter screen.
The instructions are located on the following link to clean the pump filter screen.

Load stops and flashes F-21

F-21 is a code that indicates "long drain".Check the drain line for kinks or obstructions. Check the pump. Check eletrical connections at the pump. Remove the hoses from the pump and use a flashlight to look into the suction port. Look for anything clogging the pump (like the occasional stray sock) and check the pump impeller. Make sure there are no broken/missing blades and that the impeller will spin freely. If any blades are broken/missing or if you cannot get the impeller to spin freely, the pump is defective. Hopefully it's just a clogged pump, drain line, or a jammed impeller. Hope this helped and best wishes.
