It's the Sony version of firewire. (a type of connection similar to USB, but designed differently) Most computers come with some kind of firewire hookup, but ever since USB2 came out, it's mostly there for backwards compatibility just in case you have a firewire gadget of some kind. There isn't a whole lot of hardware out there that uses it anymore. It came out about the same time as USB1 and was a lot faster, but far more expensive than USB2, so it's kind of pointless.
