Question about Toshiba Satellite P205-S6287 Notebook PC

Routers I'm going to buy a laptop. What is the best way to hook it up to the internet? I'm thinking about buying a router. I'm just worried that if I use a router, I won't be able to use wi-fi anywhere but within range of that router. Is that true? Or will I still be able to use it anywhere?

There are a lot of different ways you can go. you can get a wwireless router, or you can get a wired router and a seperate wireless gaetway device and cable it to the router. That would enable you to put it someplace centrally located. you could also get a wireless capable router AND a wireless acces point and combine them to double your coverage area.

I all depends upon what you need it to do and what is more important to you.

Also, there are several "extended Range" routers, but the extended range usually only occurs if you have the same brand of wireless card with the extra features built in.

There are also antenna boosters available that can increase the range of any wireless signal as well.

Of all standards, wireless G will give you the greatest range of all of them, and make sure you set your router up to only use The Wireles "G" format, it will make better use of that longer range capability.

It sounds to me like you only have a cable/adsl modem bringing in your internet connection. To share your internet with other wifi devices you will need to buy a Wireless router. Be aware you can buy adsl and cable routers depending on what your broadband provider has given you. Take these details into a computer shop who will advise you of the right type of router to buy. Dont buy cheap, go for something like a netgear router.

Not sure what you're asking. If your laptop has a wireless card installed in it, then any wireless router should work. If you're asking what wireless router to buy, do a Google search on top 10 wireless routers.

How to make the toshiba satellite a15-129 pc notebook wireless?

The first thing that you need tohave in order to get wireless internet is a wireless networking adapter. If you own a newer laptop, this is probably inside your computer as we speak.
If you don't own a wireless carddon't panic.
You can easily purchase oneseparately. They are relatively inexpensive. The best place to purchase a wirelesscard is eBay (opens new window).
There are two important thing thingsto look for in your wireless card.
1.Make sure it is a 802.11g card. They have 802.11b, 802.11a, and several others.Having an 802.11g will enable you to connect at much faster speeds and fromfarther away.
2.Purchase a wireless card that connects in the PCMCIA slot.
The next thing you are going to wantto get is high speed internet. It is possible to have wireless internet withdial-up, but it will be so slow it simply isn't worth it.
In order to have high speedinternet, you are going to need a cableor dsl modem depending on what internet you have. This type of modemwill not be found in your laptop.
There are many different types andbrands of modems out there. I have had no problems or complaints with the Motorola Surfboard. It's easyto set up and has lasted a long time now.
Other well known modems are Linksys and Netgear.
You can get cable/dsl modems muchcheaper on eBay. But make sure that all of the equipment comes in the box.Either order one that says new or contact the seller and ask them if all of thewires and cables are included.
The next thing on how to set upwireless internet is getting a wirelessrouter (opens new window).
This is the piece of equipment thatmakes things wireless. You can have high speed internet without a router. Butto be able to connect multiple computers and have your laptop have a wirelessconnection you are going to have to purchase a router.

Fortunately, routers are gettingcheaper and cheaper by the day now.
You can certainly find a nice wireless router on eBay forunder $30.
Similar to the wireless card, makesure you get a router that is 802.11g. This will allow you to connect fasterand from farther away.
Also, try to look for a routerthat has a connection of at least 54 Mbps. Ifseveral people will be using the internet at one time you may consider gettinga router even faster then that.
Once you have all of the necessaryequipment, it's time to hook everything up.
It's hard to explain precisely howto do this because each modem and router may need to be hooked up differently.
But the main steps on how to set upwireless internet are this...
1.Hook up wherever your internet is coming from to your modem. Your internetsource will vary depending on whether you have Cable or DSL.
2.Connect your modem to your router. This is the essential part of makingwireless possible.
3. Turn on whatever computer you havethat has a wireless card and enjoy your wireless internet experience!

I have a broadband internet connection at home which had a modem and only one LAN cable. Now I have 2 laptop's one with Microsoft XP and other MS-Vista. Whenever I try to connect internet the one with XP...

if you had say one desktop and one laptop I would say to buy another LAN card for the desktop and enable internet connection sharing on it for the other computer but with two laptops that might not be possible and you will need a router.
But routers are pretty cheap nowadays and you can probably find a basic 4 port router on eBay for around $20 (you don’t really need to spend the extra money on a wireless one unless of course both laptops have wireless connections then you might find that a wireless router to be pretty useful.)
But to answer your question YES you need a router since a router will take your IP address and split it up into multiple internal IP addresses and allow more that one connection to the internet that will appear as one connection to your ISP

Network problems connecting to internet

Hi. If Dell is correct, then yes, it would be expensive. Your other alternative is to buy a PCMCIA Ethernet Card. They range from about $20 to $40. Or, you could go with what you suggested and do wireless via a wireless router.

If all you're looking for is wireless internet within your home, then you can simply buy a wireless router off the shelf from Best Buy. However, a wireless router will only provide a range of a couple hundred feet, perhaps a couple of hundred yards. Essentially, it only provides internet access at a single fixed location. I'm getting the impression you're looking for something more.

If you're looking to have internet access wherever you go, no matter how far from home, you're going to need a subscription to wireless internet from a cellular provider such as AT&T or Sprint. They sell both internet access as well as the cards used to connect to the network, so check out their websites to explore your options.
