Question about Computers & Internet

Model 64213 (not a wireless model) Trackball is not working smoothly - already tried cleaning it and still gets "stuck" especially moving left and right. Up and down works well.

This is because the wheels that move with he trackball are getting stuck.

Try cleaning the inside housing.(The part that holds that trackball) Mainly, the tiny wheels that grab the trackball. Normal use can build up a gummy buildup inside that can be easily rubbed off with a cloth. Since the housing is underneath the trackball, there can be a greater potential for lint, crumbs or anything else to get inside as well. Clen in there, empty out any debree and you will find ti moves much smoother.

alternatively, one of the tiny wheels could be damaged and is not rolling properly. Roll each one with your finger to see if you can feal anything rough or if the wheel is rubbing against something.

Make sure you put in the right model number (dimension 2400). Transfer them to a USB key, and move the USB key to your desktop. Install those drivers and everything work will again. As I try to guide the mouse to the right postion it takes off by itself wherever it may want tio go

This is a TRACKBALL, and does not rely on any surface underneath it. It is WIRED, and has no batteries to replace. Clean the bearings, yes, and the ball. A few Q-Tips, some rubbing alcohol, a couple paper towels aer all you need. After a tint bit, only a drop or two of pretty much any oil will also help everything run smoothly. But if it has not just an unsmooth feeling, but the cursor is actually jumping around on the screen, the most likely culprit is hair/lint/fibers/etc. inside the little oval opening behind the ball, which is being sensed by the optics and causes the jumpiness. Q-tip, toothpick, or such may help, or some compressed air, or a quick "poof" by mouth usually does the trick.

Poor mouse movement

If you remove the ball, look inside there are 2 white rollers(they may ba a different color) that touch the ball as it moves, there will be build up of gunk on them from the ball, use an exacto knife or something small to scrape the stuff off of them.

When you try to connect via wireless, does it ask for your wep key? Also try and running wireless network connection utility in setting up wireless networks, I'm sure you have already done this, but, it doesn't hurt to try it again and see if there is anything you may have overlooked.

Trackball not working

dear gridlok
Turn the BB off. Press and hold the trackball and roll it in all directions. that should dislodge any dirt and/or lint that is covering the contacts.

Next, dip a Q-tip in alcohol and rub it all around and over the trackball. That will clean it.

Turn the BB back on and it should work as it should.

Don't carry it in your pocket or purse without the case. or) YOu need to clean your trackball.

1: Take a deep breath and blow on the trackball area, rotate and do it again. This may blow any particles block the sensors.
2: This requires a Q-tip and some alcohol. Turn off your sidekick, wet the end of the q-tip, and gently clean the trackball while rotating. Be careful not to get the alcohol on anything but the trackball. Let dry for a minute and try it out. If this doesn’t work then try again.

I recently moved house and got virgin media to install phone tv and broadband. Connected the modem through Ethernet. Worked fine....then the PC froze and when I restarted, start up message was "PORT...

That's fantastic, but other than blaming either Virgin or your new house for the PC problem, not terribly instructive.  What's this about a modem...you mean you connected your PC to Virgin's cablemodem using cat5 ethernet, which is pretty normal?

Give exacting circumstances (e.g. timing after the BIOS and Windows screens came up) and descriptions of the error messages, and people can help out, especially if you go create a new problem under your exact PC model, and try to suss out the problem by googling for 'Port 00 error' and your model.

As it is it sounds like Windows found bits of itself missing (as moving vans can cause sectors to go bad on HDs) and vainly hoped you would have the Windows 98 or XP install CD handy to fix things.  It is probably time to install a new hard drive and appropriate OS of your choice, and copy info over from the old drive before labeling and packing that thing for spare use.
