Computer won't recognize external usb hard drive

try it on another computer if that dosent work you should
reformat your computer but first backup all your data by putting your another internal hardrive on your computer and move all your files you need to the empty hardrive and after that take the hardrive with all your stuff in it off the computer and then reformat the hardrive which the external hardrive does not work on and install a new operating system then put the other hardrive with all your stuff back on your computer and transfer your stuff into the hardrive with a operating system then try the external hardrive

OR
you can burn all your stuff into a CD or a DVD
OR
you can put all your stuff into FlashDrives and then after you reformat the hardrive with an operating system put your stuff back into the computer and after that the external hardrive should work

I have a 16 GB verbatim brand jump drive that I cannot open up. I have tried other usb ports on different computers. Is it common for jump drives to go bad? Do you have any suggestions? Thank you!

If not "safely removed" USB drives can go bad. If your system recognizes the drive when plugged in you can try doing a scan disk on it and check for any errors that may be preventing you from accessing the file system.

Plug in the USB drive, check my computer and see if the drive is there, if it is, right click the drive, click properties, and tools and select the option to scan the disk.

If you do not see the drive in My Computer, click start, Run, type DISKMGMT.MSC and click OK. Check and see if your drive is being recognized in Disk Management.

If you still do not see it in Disk Management, they you may just have a faulty jump drive, at which point you should contact Verbatim to see if they have any other recommendations or if it is still under warranty.

Most DVD drives are also CD drives, and it sounds like the DVD part is broken, you need to replace the DVD drive, this is done simply by buying a new one, I recommend Newegg.com ( if your unsure search exactly what you already have) then opening your case (tower) and just unplugging old one and plugging new one in, it really is very doable for even a novice.

2nd hard drive dissappeared from windows

first of all. you will need to check on the BIOS if the hard drive is being recognized. if it's not recognized, try to use another sata cable and plug it on another sata socket on the motherboard.
if still not recognized, probably its fried. if you get the info of the hard drive on the BIOS, go to windows and then go to computer, right click it and click on manage. click on disk management on the left side of the screen and then you will see on the right side all the information of all the recognized hard drives. if you see the missing one in here, most probably the information that was here is already lost, but you can right click it and then click on initialize, and then reformat the drive to use it again.

I think my compaq presario desktop has crashed

the computer is not recognizing the contents of your hard drive. you'll need a floppy with command.com, iosys.com and sysinfo.com on it. when inserted into the drive cmos looks here first. if you can access the cmos, check the search parameters to see what the computer boot up sequence is. you may want to change it to recognize the cdrom first, then the hard drive, then the A drive. I had a compaq armada that gave me the same message but I was able to reformat the drive off DOS 6.2 and changed the boot up sequence.

How to make Vista to recognize my old Hard drive

There are normally only two ways to get vista to recognise large drives and that is to format it within windows by way of right click my computer then click manage and then highlight your harddrive right click and select format. The other way is if your drive isnt being recognised because of the bios and needs updating, as most bios chips did when upgrading to vista.
