Connecting Kindle Fire to Denon receiver

Assuming that you've tried a different HDMI cable, tried a different input plug and you weren't watching a 1920's silent film..its possible that the front middle speaker is the issue? try and see if there is sound coming from that speaker, its usually where the voices from movies comes from.

I have a Denon receiver, had it for a couple years now and has worked perfectly. Last week I was watching a movie and all of a sudden my receiver shut off and it blinked a red ring of death. I let it rest...

Did you recently move any speakers around or any items near the speaker wire connections?
It sounds like you may have a speaker wire shorting which is causing the receiver to go into "auto protect" mode. Check all of the speaker wire connections on the back of the receiver and at all of the speakers to make sure the wires are not touching or close enough to possibly touch.

Problem getting the best surround sound when watching a dvd

THE BEST SOUND IS WHAT SOUNDS BEST TO YOU, HOWEVER DO THIS:
1, USING THE SETUP MIC CONFIGURE YOUR DENON, PAGE 8 OF THE MANUAL. NEXT
2. RAISE THE REAR SPKR LEVELS, PAGE 46,47. NEXT
3. WHEN LISTENING TO AUDIO CD OR RADIO TRY THE 5 CH STEREO DSP MODE.
4. WHEN WATCHING A DVD USE DSP DOLBY PROLOGIC OR TRY 5CH STEREO IF THE MOVIE IS MOSTLY TALKING.
5, TRY 5CH STEREO WHEN WATCHING PROGRAMS WITH MOSTLY TALKING

The best way to use the Denon and get your money's worth is to connect all devices to the Denon using HDMI connects if possible, if you use HDMI make sure you assign the audio if needed.

I have the denon avr-688 - when i use the mic to auto setup, i have sound from each of my speakers, but when trying to watch tv or a blu ray movie there's no sound at all

Check your blu-ray connection. Is the HDMI cable going from the player to the receiver, then another HDMI cable going from the receiver to the television? What about your TV input? Is there a cable going from the cable converter box to the receiver's input?

Static comes from speakers

I think it's a grounding problem. Actually, it's a necessity for all audio-video equipments to get grounded properly. If you don't have a ground connection in your AC plug, your receiver will collect more and more static electricity. As a matter of fact, it decreases the sound quality that you can get from your equipment. I think that the effect of your reaction (slapping the receiver) isn't coincidental. When you touch any metal surface on your receiver (even while slapping) you condact the static electricity to the ground. I've had a same sort of problem with my receiver. Especially when I connected my laptop computer to the receiver, I heard an annoying distorted sound from the speakers. I found out that it was ground loop, which occurs when the negative (common) signal of the source coincides with the one of the receiver's. As a solution, I grounded my amp, changed all wires with new and shielded ones, and purchased an AC filter. Then, I got rid of the noise. I have to say that the AC filter (Belkin Pure AV Surge Protector, it also includes an AC signal filter)benefited me the most.
