Question about Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX9 Digital Camera

1 Answer

Lumix lens retracts and extends

My Lumix FX-9 won't keep the lens retracted. The lens is extended, but turning it on retracts the lens and then immediately extends it again. Same in viewing and picture taking modes. Will not autofocus and the zoom doesn't do anything. After a few seconds, it gives the "Please turn camera off and then on again" message. Removing battery and card doesn't help.

Lens will only partially come out - a few mm - when powered up. It then retracts.

The lens is retracting because there is something preventing it from fully extending. It is a safety mechanism built into all digital compact cameras to be sure the lens doesn't force itself and break. Once it encounters resistance, it will retract.
Make sure there is no debris between the lens rings and try again. If the problem doesn't go away, you will likely need to take your camera in to be repaired.

When I turn my panasonic lumix tz3 on to take a photo, it struggles to focus and then says 'please turn camera off and then on again'. I do that but it just keeps saying the same thing. Anything I can do??

The problem is in the mechanical part of the lens housing, the motor that extends and retracts the lens is slowly seizing up, or the gears have ware and tare, or they need lubrication. This is a delicate job that require a camera technician to remedy the situation. If you continue to use the camera it will eventually stop working.

My camera lens won't move. I recently was out on a photoshoot with friends, and I ended up falling down with the camera in my hand while the lens was extended. At first it didn't move at all, but I got the...

I am sorry to say that this is a problem related to the lens mechanism. The lens gears may have kinked/slipped when you fell down and this seems to be the reason why the lens cannot extend retrace. Unfortunately this is one repair that you don't wanna do yourself. The lens assembly has to be completely disassembled just to know the exact cause of the problem and any further damage means a new camera. Panasonic will charge you the cost of a new cam to fix it. So to get an estimate from your local camera tech would be the way to go.

Turn camera on, lens goes in and out then camera shuts off

You may try resetting the Camera to the original factory settings.
If the issue persists then service will be required.

Lens error, restart camera

Lens error is usually caused by mechanical faults concerning lens assembly. The lens cannot extend or retract fully, the error is detected and lens error is returned.
Sometimes this can be fixed playing with the lens during extraction or retraction to help the lens asset getting back to normal.
More often the camera lens must be disassembled and re-assembled by a technician to fix the problem.

Hi,
I too have the sam problem but was able to solve it. I called the 1-800-number and was told that this is a very common issue or this camera. They told me to tap the lens when it was extended on a cloth or towel so not to damage it. The point was that there is often a piece of dirt or sand preventing the lens from retracting properly. Guess what, a single grain of sand came out when I tapped the lens and the camera worked perfectly ever since. I looked in the camera case since I keep the camera in it all the time and there were a few grains of sand that had somehow gotten into the lens!

I hope this can help someone else out.

Thanks.

Lens will not retract

It sound like a problem with the zooming mechanism (lens would not retract or extended) Press the power button on and hold it down while extending and twisting the telescopic zoom lens. It might fix your problem. In any case it could not make it worse. Good luck!
