This file describes a problem with the Indigo 2 R10000 system, when
trying to use the Toshiba XM6401B 40X SCSI CDROM drive mounted
internally (using a drive sled).
This note does NOT apply to any other types of SGI machines, R4K and
newer, including R4x00 based Indigo 2 systems, where the XM6401B appears
to work fine.
In the above mentioned case, on powerup of the Indigo 2 R10K, the
XM6401B
does NOT seem to be recognized by the system. It will not show up in
hinv
from the PROM monitor, nor will Irix recognize that the XM6401B is
attached. The workaround is, after powerup, hit the reset button
on the front panel. The XM6401B is then recognized by the PROM monitor,
and Irix will show the drive as being installed.
Note that this appears to be a problem with the SCSI firmware in the
Indigo 2 itself. If you put the XM6401B externally (on SCSI bus 1),
the problem does not appear.
