Question about Pioneer AVIC-S1 GPS Receiver

1 Answer

Pioneer SX-950 I have had this since 1977. It is in mint condition inside and out exept for this problem. The relay does not turn on. It powers up and all lights work. Tuner is responding and shows signal and stereo indicator works. I checked out the fuses and all are fine. I checked for bad solder joints on the protection board and power supply board. Thereis no burnt smell or discoloration on anything I can see. By virtue of the fuses not blowing leads me to believe that the output transistors are alright. I would like to test the transistors on the protection circuit board but I don't know if it would be best to remove them off the board so I can get an accurate read. I would really appreciate anyone who can steer me in the right direction. I will never get rid of the receiver. I refuse to throw away (waste) the receiver in a throw away world we live in now. It was built to last a lifetime and by god it will!

Speaker Relay Output Switch was a common problem with most SX models of the 70's. It's the switch you hear click on after about 4 seconds of power switch being turned on. It's still avail. thru Pioneer parts for around $45.

Pioneer sx-850 goes into protection after several minutes of use. It seems to be after warm up or when room temperature is too high. Summer temps.

Did you check whether the protection assy is working properly? The protection circuit is checking the current of the power transistors as far as I remeber. So there are several possibilities for that fault.
You should grab the service manual or at least schematic (http://elektrotanya.com/pioneer_sx-850_sch.pdf/download.html) and then go step-by-step. I recommend to start up with the protection assy itself. If this works properly go for the power amp. It is also not unlikely that the power supply is the cause of the problem.
Good luck.

Power switch on my Pioneer SX-950 receiver is hard to move.

Buy some electronic contact cleaner in a spray can, attach straw, "unplug receiver" and spray the power button, you may have to remove to be more effective.

Pioneer SX-2300 powers up, but no sound.

Does the output relay click about 5 sec. after powering on? If it does check if the tape2/tape monitor is on. Check speakers and wiring. Try headphones.

There aren't any fuses for the output.

If no relay then it probably needs output transistors and a few resistors.

Dead no power.. checked main fuse, worked fine last night, went to turn it on today and nothing. its a sx-316 not sx-315, I say this because it tells me this is not a valid model#, but sx316 is printed on...

Check the resistance of the primary on the main power transformer, (with power off) should be 1-3 ohms. If open you need a new transformer.

If good turn it on and check for ac voltage (120v) there.

SX-205. Left channel doesn't work.Internal problem. Should I change any semiconductors / transistors, diods or other/? How to find out, which semiconductor is bad? Please, help me.

Check the final output relays first. They are mechanical and have been known to fail after so many cycles. The click you hear about 3 seconds after you push the power button are those relays.

This model has a audio relay at the speakers output. When you turn the unit on there's a short delay and then the audio output switches on. It happened exactly the same with my unit. The problem is that this relay is not "closing" properly so there´s no audio coming to the speaker rear pannel conectors. You´ll find this relay inside the receiver, exactly behind the power switch. It's a clear rectangular plastic box with coils and contacts inside, make sure these contacts close after turning the unit on. You may need to take away the clear plastic box in order to have access to these contacts. Clean them and the mechanism with proper electronic fluid. Make sure these contacts are moving and the springs are ok. Hope this helps. Regards, Andy.

a little bit foolish thing: see if you have both the speaker channels (A and B) down. if you have both down it doesn't work - didn't for me.. and obviously make sure you have the right letter down - same outpout as your boxes
