Can I override the bios at startup so that it will recognize a new hard drive - for linux?

There should be no need to play around with your bios settings. Linux will install on a brand new hard drive as the sole operating system, or on an existing hard drive alongside Windows without any problem.

If you haven't already got a Linux distro, have a look at
http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop

Download whichever version of Ubuntu you prefer (LTS- the long term support version is recommended).

When the .iso file containing the operating system had downloaded, burn it onto a dvd, or install it on a usb drive.

Insert the dvd into the drive and restart or switch off/switch on the computer. The dvd will then kick in and offer you the choice of trying Ubuntu without installing, or a full install.

If you're using a new, empty hard drive just follow the on screen instructions and Ubuntu will install as the sole operating system.

If you already have Windows on your hard drive Ubuntu will give you the choice of either erasing Windows or installing Ubuntu alongside Windows. It's your choice.

Installing Ubuntu alongside Windows creates a dual boot hard drive. At start up you just choose which OS to use - Windows or Ubuntu. If creating this dual-boot system Ubuntu puts a (Linux) boot loader into the Windows OS so that Linux is recognised.

If you save the Ubuntu file to a usb drive you then have to change the bios settings so that your computer uses USB as the first boot device. Then restart your computer so that it boots in from your usb .. and Ubuntu will begin installing.

Whichever you use - dvd or usb - during the installation process Ubuntu will ask you how many GB of hard drive space it should use? You do not need to physically partition the hard drive. Linux will do it for you.

If it's a desktop PC you are using with Windows on the first hard drive and are fitting a second hard drive to install Linux on, or have installed Linux on the second hard drive .. and find that Linux doesn't appear at start up, it's because there's no Linux boot loader in Windows.

I quit using Windows many years ago.

After installing ubuntu i get a blank screen saying error

I think, this problem happened because you are installing Ubuntu from the ISO image on your physical hard drive.

Here is the way around this problem. when you get to the option to unstall Ubuntu, press F4 and choose Safe graphics mode. then choose the first option on the menu:Try Ubuntu without any change to your computer.

If you still get the same problem do this:
At the prompt, press F4 and select "Safe graphics mode".
then press F6.
Modify the following boot line:
"Boot Options seed/ubuntu.seed boot=casper initrd=/casper/initrd.gz quiet splash -" Delete the part that says "quiet splash "" -" and replace it with "vga=791 noreplace-paravirt"

That will make Ubuntu boot onto the GUI. After logging into Ubuntu Interface you should be able to see an installation folder on the desktop:

Click on the Install folder. The installation wizard should come up:

Select the language and click Forward. Next Choose your location:

Choose your city, and click Forward. Don't worry if the time zone is not OK, you can change that later when you login to Ubuntu.
Next, you will need to choose your Keyboard layout, if you are in the US, mostly all your options will be the default. If you are not in the US, choose your settings accordingly. Click Forward.

image-thumb39.png

Next, you will need to prepare the disk space, remember that you chose to use 10 GB of hard disk space for this virtual machine, so select the default option, Guided "" use the entire disk.

image-thumb40.png

Click Forward. Next, you will have fill out, your name, your username, password, and Computer name":

image-thumb41.png

After you have entered the info, click on Forward. Next, you will get a summary of the installation. Click Install to begin the installation:

image-thumb42.png

The installation should start.

image-thumb43.png

After 20 "" 30 minutes, the installation will finished, and will ask you if you want to reboot. At this stage Ubuntu is installed on your computer permanently.

image-thumb44.png

Click on Restart now. Now Ubuntu should be installed and ready to be used on your virtual PC

Is this computer supporting USb functionality in installation mode? Have you tried using a PS2 Mouse and Keyboard to try and solve the issue? Some computers do not have the ability to run USB devices pre-windows so try to use a PS2 device and see if it works.

Hello Sir,

I am sure your system meets the normal requirement for installing and using the Ubuntu OS. So you dont have to worry about the system speed and perfomance. I have also sent you the link to download the latest version of Ubuntu OS 10.4 from the original website. All you need to do is download it and burn that image file using nero or any image burning software to the dvd and boot the dvd in your system and install it.

Trying to install wireless adapter on ubuntu operating system it say onley for windows xp or vista is there software out there for ubuntu

The simplest solution is to use NDISWrapper, which lets Ubuntu use the WIndows drivers for your wireless adapter. Information on how to do this is at the Ubuntu documentation site here.

Hope this helps you get connected, and thanks for using Fixya!

Audiodrive doesn't work with ubuntu

Ubuntu is based on linux, and as a result, not all audio chipsets are supported.  you will have to look into custom written drivers or try using ndiswrapper.

No sound

When you go from Windows to Linux (Ubuntu) you will have problems as the hardware and drivers were made for Windows and not Linux. Ubuntu does not always automatically pick up your hardware. Here's what you can do to make it easier. The latest Ubuntu is 8.10 so you need to download the latest version. Then once that is downloaded you need to look at the top bar, there will be a red arrow asking you to download the latest patches. Take those steps as it will bring you current version and current software and may allow your sound card to work.

I don't know how to install new programs on that Linux version. But, on mine (Ubuntu 8.04) I can download a .deb file and Ubuntu can intall it by itself. I guess you will find a version of Open Office in the next link http://download.openoffice.org/index.html

...and click on Get more platforms and languages.

There are other ways to get the program and install it, by command line. Check in your version doc if you can use apt-get. The line would look like

apt-get install openoffice.org

with a previous su or sudo : sudo apt-get install openoffice.org

Get the driver for the WN121T from the NetGear webset and install it before pluging the adapter into the notebook. Use a wired connection on the notebook until you have the drive downloaded.
