I have lost my installation disk and am unable to install the Smartdisk 2700 to my to my new computer

What type of computer (OS version)? If you mean a SmartDisk SmartScan 2700, it only worked with Windows XP and 2000 and Mac OS 10.3 and 10.4 with the original software. There is a work-around for more recent OS versions. You need to find a copy of CyberView X that is compatible with your OS. This installs the driver for the film scanner. I found this page, https://cyberview-x.software.informer.com/ , with the Windows version of the driver software through Google. Then you can buy and install the VueScan software, https://www.hamrick.com/vuescan/smartdisk_smartscan_2700.html . The software has a free version for testing. However, neither the free or standard version support scanning film. You can buy the software either as a monthly subscription or a one-time purchase.

I hope this helps. In general, you need to install the driver before connecting the USB cable between the scanner and your computer.

You could buy a disk-drive-to-USB adapter, and connect the "bare" disk-drive to a USB port on your computer, and then copy all the files onto your computer.

for under $5.00 for such an adapter.

Or, you could spend about $40 to buy a brand-new enclosure & AC-adapter & cable that is "empty", and then you could "transplant" your 40GB disk-drive into that enclosure, without losing any data on the disk-drive. Then, copy the files, and then remove the disk-drive, and purchase a new, larger, disk-drive, and install that into the new enclosure.

Given that your disk-drive is "only" 40GB, it's probably getting old, and is "out-of-warranty", and thus should be "retired" before it completely fails.

So, the best solution would be to buy a brand-new, much larger, external storage device.

Take your SmartDisk to any computer-store.

They can open the case, remove the disk-drive,
and mount the disk-drive in a new "empty" external casing,
with a new power-supply.

You should be able to install the hard drive to your new computer. And what happened to the old computer? Did your hard drive fail? You can take the hard drive out of it and change the pins to slave cylinder and hook it up to another computer and get the files off of it. You can even run scandisk on it and sometimes fix it enough to retrieve the files you want. then just copy them to your new one. If the hookups are different than new one, you might have to find a friend that has an old one like it.

Listen closely for a repetitious clicking. If you hear that you may have a bad disk. If it shows up in my computer but appears empty or unaccessable then you also may have a bad drive. If you can open the drive but nothing it in the folder then the contents may be hidden. If your on windows XP go to tools on the top and then folder options, If your on vista or windows 7 then go to the organize tab and go to folders and search options.From there you will see a folder options window, Go to view and toggle " view hidden files and folders " click apply and ok, and ok to all files and folders. If you see nothing but the computer makes the USB plug in sound you either have incorrect drivers and they need re installation or you disk does not have an assigned letter. Try your disk on another computer in this case. If your unit dos not at all show up or continues to be unresponsive you probably have a bad disk.
