Question about Dell Latitude D400 Notebook

Screen Resolution Too Big

I got a Dell Latitude D400 from my uncle. I reinstalled windows and wiped its memory. But now I can't make the screen smaller. All of the windows are really big, and I can't see parts of windows, I have to drag them to the side to even close them. I tried going into Control Panel> Appearances and Themes, as well as Display options and neither will change the screen resolution to anything smaller. Is there anything else I can try?

You most likely need to install the video drivers for it.
try this:

Will you try to right click on your screen then go to properties, click display "settings", and drag your resolution to the highest value

good luck

Factory restore

Luis,
The Latitude D400 never shipped with a Factory Restore Image. You will need to format and reinstall Windows Manually. At the link below are instructions for reinstalling Windows on your system.

I need to change the screen resolution and the slider bar under display will not move from 640 x 480 or 16 bit. I just had to reinstall Windows XP pro after it crashed and I didn't have the problem...

Hi Friend, As you have told me that you have reinstalled Windows on the system and after that you are not able to select the screen resolution. So, I believe that you might try updating the video drivers for the system that can fix the issue.
Here is the link of latest video drivers for Dell:
http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&releaseid=R111509&SystemID=LAT_PNT_PM_D400&servicetag=&os=WW1&osl=en&deviceid=3110&devlib=0&typecnt=0&vercnt=9&catid=-1&impid=-1&formatcnt=0&libid=6&typeid=-1&dateid=-1&formatid=-1&source=-1&fileid=145641
Please yry and let me know if it was of help.

Depends on OS but usually it's control panel> display> settings and move the slider bar up or down.

My D400 overheats and screen freezes when hooked

The biggest issue docking is airflow. With the system docked, airflow is restricted.

Might look at ways of improving airflow.

I reinstalled windows xp on my dell latitude D400 notebook now my display settings are 640 x 480 pixels and I cannot change it I have tried to download drivers from the dell support website but cannot...

You have to be absolutely sure you are downloading the correct display drivers for your system. The dell installers are very picky.
There are 2 video drivers here is the link.

Partially blank screen on top of my DELL latitude d400

reinstall it clean ...I mean from scratch..if is a virus or a OS error it wil fix the issue ...it also may be a screen setting ...Im not sure if it has such a feature on your laptop ..but it worth to try ...look for something like the settings from the clasic monitors...also look into the control panel maybe has some settings for the display there ....by the way you described..it doesn't sounds like a lcd malfunction ..cause those slightly ever get this regulate ...and often on small areas...and not rectangular or in lines( band) ...also check the resolution ...even one by one ...to see if another will fit better ...Good luck !

Dont have username and password need restart

Hi,
You can use the following steps
1. Restart your computer
2. Tap on the F8 key slowly 5 times on the Blue Dell logo screen
3. Select safe mode from the screen
4 Hit enter
5 When you see the windows login screen Click on Adminstartor account
6 Click on Yes
Once you have logged into the adminstartor account
1. click on start
2. Click on control panel
3. click on user accont
4. You can change the password for the exiting account or create a new account
If you are not able to login to the adminstrator account aswell beacuse of the password, the only option would be to reinstall the operating system from the windows xp cd

Thanks
Proton
