all modern LCDs have ONE and ONE only native screen size. since you did not tell us the model number we have to tell you maybe you are setting the wrong size. if the monitor has worked before then you are sending it the wrong signal.

If you are going to DIY and have proper tools and know safety precaution then please read on:
Most common failures in the LCD monitors are bad capacitors (bulging top/seal or leaking) in the power supply (they should be replaced in a set), blown fuses; poor solder joints, failed inverter circuits (blown fuse, shorted transistors, shorted/open transformers), bad lamps (poor solder connections or worn out lamps). You will need to open it up and inspect the inside, see example of failed VIEWSONIC monitors to get some ideas what to look for: http://s807.photobucket.com/home/budm/allalbums

My HP vs17X monitor is around 4 years old. Screen is black. When I turn it off, then on again it lights for a few seconds then fades to black. The blue light on the power button is on (not flashing), but...

It can be 12vdc power supply section with bad cap, that will be the first place to look, or it is the backight inverter circuits, worst case will be the lamp assemblies, but find out first if the caps are good or bad, please note that bad cap may look normal but can have high ESR.

Twice my Dell monitor has exhibited this failure. I leave the system alone, so the screen is black when I return (normal). I move the mouse and the screen blinks, but goes back to black, and the power...

Blinking powerlamp is indicating that the power supply is in shut down/restart due to short circuits, these DELL are known to have failed transistors in the inverter circuits due to poor solder joints. See example of here:

Picture goes black at random intervals

There are 4 c5707/5706 in the inverter transformer driving circuits, the cause of the problem was due to poor solder connection in the bias circuits of the transistors. Make sure to check that after you install the new transistors otherwise you will blowthem up. Common problem with this model. When the circuit drwas too much power from the power supply, it will shut itself off to ptotect itself.
