Remove carb from mower being careful to remember where all springs and rods are placed. Go to local auto parts and buy a can of spray carb cleaner and spray carb as thourogh as you can, spaying every hole you can see inside and out. Remove air screw from carb and spray through the hole and clean tip of screw. Screw in finger tight and back out one and a half turns. Put carb back on and prime it with just a small amount of clean fuel. May also want to check tank to be sure there is no dirt inside, if there is you should remove it and clean it out.

I had a similar problem wit a 10hp B/S. It was the carb - needle valve/float sticking open and flooding. Tapping the carb body with a light hammer will solve the problem temporarily. When parked, mine also would overflow gas into the cylinder and from there into the crank case. Had to put in ma shutoff valve in the fuel line. B/S uses a poor carb sometimes.

I would check the fuel filter, if you can't visually inspect it, replace it.More info on the symptoms would be necc. if that doesn't help.Re: does it die as soon as the motor gets to operating temp, how long does it have to sit after running before it will start again.

My mower runs rough revs up and down then will die... coughs out smoke from the carberator... will comtinue to run reving up and down if I tilt it back on the rear wheels Murray select 22 mod....

take the bowl off the carb and see if the float isn't sticking sounds like it is getting to much fuel.

Lawn mower runs and then putters down, won't die but runs slow.

clean the air filter,wash out in turps if foam type,then wash in soapy hot water,then rinse,let dry,then put litle bit of clean engine oil in it,squeeze.drain all fuel,and put fresh in.may have to pull carb to bits and blow out,and reassemble.put new spark plug in.is it a briggs engine,or tecumseh?

I'm having problems with the mower idling. If i tilt the mower back with the 2 front wheels off the ground it runs fine but when i put it back down it runs really slow. It's a murray select 22'' 4.0 hp...

sharpen the blade, check for bent fuel pick up line inside the tank...if carb has a float setting check that as well..

Change your air filter, spark plug, fuel filter, and oil. Then make sure the gas is fresh. Gas starts going bad after a month. Spray carb cleaner in hole underneith the fuel filter. Oh yea dont put more than 20oz of oil in it.
