Carburator and idle problem

Hello

I have a 1984 tercel wagon 2wd with a 1.5 carburated.

I have always had problems with the idle running rough, bouncing around, and having it stall at idle

The carburator was rebuilt in october 2004, and again in november 2007.
it probably was run for 10k to 15K miles between the two rebuilds.

Car idle is hard to get to set via gas pedal, and only seems to set while the car is cold.

when the car gets warm , the idle meanders, and it will stall at Idle

Help :O

The carb has been adjusted, and rebuilt twice in the last 4 years

idle good and when running short distance, there is no gas in the carburator. after 20 to 30 mites, its starts again for a short distance again.

Believe it or not you just said the solution to your own problem manufacturers specs requires for any adjustments to engine idle or other carburator adjustments to be preformed while the engine is idling and at normal operating temp in plain english let the car warm up then make your idle and mixture adjustments if this doesnt solve it i would check the auto choke and make sure it is opening at normal operating temp hope this helps good luck

Check air filter, check eventually check and replace spark plugs, and if there is a fuel filter replace it.
Once you do this basic maintenance you need to set up speed screw and mixture screw on carburetor:

Adjust idling for carburator and check if its leaking

SOURCE: 1984 Toyota tercel wagon

Although this isn"t a proper fix, and may affect emissions, I ran accross this problem on a friend's 87 2wd wagon.

There is a dashpot that controls a lever the Idle set screw is on, I am guessing it is a decel valve that closes butterfly when coasting in gear. I never looked at a manual to figure out what controls the vacuum valve that is on the passenger side of the engine compartment, but if you disconect the vacuum line and plug it that lever will not back off and idle will remain where you set it with the adjustment screw.

Make sure the engine is warmed up and not on a fast idle cam before adjusting idle.

The car is a 5 speed, I not sure if automatic cars are the same.

The car idles fine now and still run's great and gets 37+ MPG with 240000 miles!

If you want to fix it properly you would have to diagnose why that dashpot is being actuated at idle

If the problem is not a vac leak, it could be the idle circuit inside the carb. You may have to replace or rebuild the carb to fix it.

My 1987 Toyota Tercel will not run. It will start, but wont stay crunk unless im giving it gas. I check for vacuum leaks and no sucess.?

if you have a carburator then you have a blocked idle jet, simple job unscrew **** dirt out clean jet hole through, replace, (change or fit fuel filter to prevent it happening again. )
to tune is simple replace jet start motor and warm up . when at operating temp turn jet out and then in till motor runs rough then screw back out til motor smooth out , and runs sweet, if it cuts out when slowing car down (while driving) screw need to come out a slight bit more

I need to adjust the carburator, how do i do it? its a 1984 ford ltd crown victoria, 5.0

What do you need to adjust? What is the symptom?
If you need to adjust the idle, there is an idler screw that has a tension spring on it so it will stay in place. Tighten it clockwise to increase the idle RPM and counter-clockwise to lower the idleing RPM.
Treat the linkage arms with carburator cleaning spray (AutoZone $4).
