Question about LaCie (300770) 250 GB Hard Drive

175gb missing from 250GB hard drive

Hi.

I installed a 250GB hard drive on my xp system. Made 2 partitions 118gb + 115GB. Life was good for some time until all of a sudden 75GB go missing from partition one and 100GB missing from partition 2! I reformatted partition 2 but still the same problem. It shows total space= 115GB, Free space= 9.9 GB. The only folders visible after the reformat are System Volume Info and Recycler. I ran SpaceMonger which shows me the free space but then says that 100GB are "unscannable".

Any assistance would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Hi,

Appreciate the "Ask Me".

The only plausible explanation for the missing disk space would be the protected folder "System Volume Info".

Re-formatting would not restore your free space, however, re-partitioning would. May I suggest that you try PowerQuest Partition Magic. Of course like formatting, re-partitioning would completely delete the partition itself and would grant you back the entire disk space.

Unfortunately you can not use the same with the 1st partition since that is your active partition and presumably where your OS is residing. A workaround is to use another hard disk temporarily and transfer all the contents of partition 1 and make that eventually as your primary HD. Thereafter, re-partition again the entire 250Gb HD.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

    Hi again,

if I may add, when re-partitioning has been done, to prevent recurrence of the same, you may want to lesses or altogether disable "System Restore".

    Cheers.

The motherboard BIOS most likely have a hard drive size limit. Yes you can create two or mare partitions to use the rest of the hard drive space.
Go to Control Panel - Administrator Tools - Disk Manager to create a partition and format this partition.

Install a partition manager program like
http://www.partition-tool.com/personal.htm
open it and you will see the entire hard disk. In there either create another partition in the unallocated space or add it to the D partition.

In XP Start > Control Panel > Administrative tools > Computer manager then on the left click disk managment, you will see your 250gb drive as drive0 most likly with partition C and beside it you should see unallocated space, you can right click this unallocated space and format it, then right click again and click make partition active.

make sure the laptop will handle a drive bigger than 130 gig. if not make two partitions when you set it up, bios wont see it but usually windows will. also, sometimes ive found that if i delete the partition a few times it eventually reads right. dont know why but have done it that way several times. you can also download a diskmanager program from thier website which makes an overlay if your bios wont support a 250.

i think you just got corruption. possibly heat related. or rootkit. uhh dynamic isn't right i think its logical .. right click the drive letter lower section and convert is best bet. i also dabbed with ptedit32 from bootable cd ubcd4win.com to fix lost partitions in prior experience.. but it was 1 partition and i found lba and other settings on drive sticker.

Samsung 200gb hdd

When u bought a new hdd, it shud not have any partition on it. but in ur case, I assume u have formatted it to ntfs but no operating system is installed in it.

If u want to make the new hdd as slave and have another old hdd as primary, that have already an operating system installed in it, then the problem shud be hdd boot priority in bios. Enter ur bios and check for hdd boot priority and put the old hdd to the top most order, then restart. this shud fix the problem.

If u installed OS in ur new hdd (win xp),
1) ntldr or ntdetect.com is missing on root dir. (c:\). If u have another computer that works and have xp installed, just put this new hdd along with the current hdd and boot to windows. Copy ntldr and ntdetect.com to your new hdd. Or another way is just repair using windows xp boot cd.
2)the windows partition is not set 'active'. to set active, boot into winxp setup and press 'r'. this will lead to recovery console. type ur passwrod for admin (def=none). use diskpart command to set active. for easy way, put the new hdd to another computer. boot to windows. rightclick my computer, choose manage. on left pane select disk manager. rightclick on ur partition, then set active.

Hope this help

Can't format or create partition......

you can try an FDISK form a windows boot disk, but you may need to read up a little on how to use it. or maxtor has a program available on their web sit called powermax that can try to find & repair possible problems. powermax may be the best & easiest way to go. good luck.
