Thank you for using FixYa,
You can't change the messaging tone to a song from your music playlist, these options for choosing your own music as ringtones are restricted to an alarm tone, phone ringtone and caller ringtone (caller ringtone is when specific people calls you, a certain ringtone would appear for that caller to differentiate between callers)
However, you can change your message ringtone to certain ringtones for your Galaxy S phone by going through the following steps: (P.S I am assuming that you are using the stock Samsung SMS application)
1) Go to your stock Samsung SMS app (it's named as 'Messaging')
2) Press the softkey 'menu' button
3) Go to settings, scroll down and from there you can see the option 'select ringtone'

Cheers!

ON HTC WILDFIRE HOW DO I CHANGE THE RINGTONE OR MESSAGE ALERT TO A PERSONAL ONE NOT ONE OF THE ONES THAT COME INSTALLED ON THE PHONE?

If you connect the phone to your computer and select 'mount as disk drive' when prompted, open up the removeable drive (your SD card) and put the music file you want to use into the 'music' file on the SD card.

Unplug the USB cable and go to 'music' in your phone. Select the song you want to use and then press menu, this will give yuo the option to select it as your default ringtone.

I havnt found a way for text messages sorry!

If you have version 3 software there is no way that you can use mp3 or downloaded tones as message tones, best thing you can do is upgrade your firmware to version 4. Type this on the dial screen to check your version *#8375#

Assigning music to ringtones and such

You have to go into the "My Audios" folder on the phone to access the card tunes. (Menu > 4(Multimedia) > 6(Audios)) for a shortcut. Once you are in the folder, move the highlight to the song you want as a ring tone. Now hit (Options > 6(Move/Copy) > 1(Move)). Now the little icon by the song will be a picture of a speaker without a memory card in front of it. (If it has a memory card icon, it is still on the card) It is on the phone's internal memory now so you can push (Options > Set As > Ringtone/Ringer ID/Message Alerts). You should be good to go!
