Question about GE Spacemaker JVM1640SJ Microwave Oven

1 Answer

No Lights just turned off

We cooked bacon in our microwave which gets pretty hot and after the last set we did, we closed the door and I went to use it later and nothing - no lights nothing - microwave is dead.  It's only two years old.  What do you suggest?  Thanks.

Chances are the magnetron overheated and the blew the thermal cutout (TCO or thermal fuse), thus protecting the magnetron.

Bacon has a fairly low moisture level and when can cause overheating if there's no water load in the oven.

That said, a microwave can be dead for many reasons.

It may be the fuse, which is usually located on the floor of the oven behind the control panel or between the door switches.

If the fuse is good, it may be an open thermostat or thermal cutout (TCO) / thermal fuse on or near the magnetron or on top of the cavity / body of the oven.

If it goes dead for a while during or after cooking then comes back on, the magnetron is probably overheating and causing the magnetron thermostat to open.

Then when it cools, it closes the circuit and allows power through again.

When checking thermostats, if it has a hood fan thermostat, that should read open, as opposed to the others, which should read closed.

If it went dead almost immediately after pressing the Start pad, that's usually a shorted high-voltage capacitor.

If it went dead a few seconds after pressing the Start pad, that's usually a failing high-voltage transformer.

If it goes dead or blows the breaker (or GFI) when you plug it in or open or close the door, then there's a problem with a door switch or door switch mount.

If it's intermittent or random, it may be a bad connection, usually on the control board or a loose fuse holder, or even an intermittent fuse.

You should do a continuity test on the fuse while it's in the holder (with the microwave unplugged, of course) then turn the fuse by hand or take it out and put it back in, then test it again.

If you remove the fuse, then press the meter leads against the ends, it can allow internal contact to be made and make a bad fuse appear to be good.

If you or someone you know decide to look into it, we have critical safety information and disassembly information at our site, and our link is at our listing here on FixYa.

There should also be a "mini-manual" hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting & testing.

You can usually find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here.

We're happy to help you and we'd appreciate your thoughtful rating of our answer.

Why does my. MAgic Che f microwave smoke inside when I cook bacon?

Although bacon can be cooked in a microwave, cooking any low water content food is ******* an oven, and can shorten the lifespan of the magnetron.

The smoke you're seeing is probably from the grease in the bacon. However, there's a slight chance it's from the power transformer as these sometimes fail slowly. You should be able to tell from the type of odor.

If I stop regular microwave cooking to check the progress, and then push start to continue, it does not cook. It just stops working. I have video of bacon taking 15 minutes to cook, because it stopped. ...

Sounds like door switch issues. Thinking the only thing you did was open and close the door, not change programing or anything. If you have an issue with a door switch and it doesnt close right after opening and closing the door( when you stir), the unit thinks the door is open so it will not run. Once the bad connection cools down it contracts and reconnects and the unit will work again. Frequently you can find which switch is doing that if you just look at the switches and see if you have any browning inside of the plastic insulators over the wires that push onto the switch terminals. If the connecton is bad it will get hot that will brown the plastic protector

I was cooking bacon. The microwave sounded to let me know that it was done. When I went in to the kitchen there are no lights on the inside, the clock is dead and none of the buttons work.

The line fuse is probally blown. Remove screws that hold the cabinet, and replace the fuse with the same type and rating. That should get you going again.

Venting of microwave - house stinks of bacon

Interesting post, because I have the same problem! I have spent the better part of today researching and taking our microwave apart (partially) to inspect the top portion re: outside vent. Everytime the microwave is on, the "active vent door" (manufacturer's term, not mine!) opens. Apparently this is normal. But it also opens when you turn on the vent fan, when cooking on the stovetop. I don't like this feature, because I think it 'overrides' the outside venting system. I double checked our outside vent to ensure that when this oven was installed, the person did in fact allow the flap to be open when the fan is on (he did). So I think what 'our' problem is, is that the microwave active vent sort of interferes with the outside vent, thus more of the cooking smell being blown into the house instead of the outdoors. I was thinking of simply disconnecting the gizmo that make the active vent door open each time you use the oven and/or vent fan option however I don't think that's a good idea as apparently the main purpose of the active vent door is to keep the electronics of the microwave oven from overheating. The more I read about this version of microwave, the less impressed I am with it. Lots of electronic issues with it. I am not fussy either with having the microwave over the cooktop. Sorry I don't have a solution for your problem but I do feel your pain!!!

The glass turntable broke in 3 pieces this morning while cooking bacon. The bacon was not yet cooked or even hot. It broke into 3 large pieces. The unit is not at all new. Does this sound normal? Did I do...

The same thing happened to my microwave this morning while heating a cup of water, which broke into 3 pieces too before the water hadnt even hot.
Maybe you have already solved your problem and I just share my experience.
I am trying to call the manufacturer nearby and ask for the turntable, but I am afraid the new turntable dosent fit my a little bit old microwave.

MW8119SB cooks when door is closed regardless of settings

Clear the cook cycle when you remove the food. Some microwaves pick up where they left off, so you don't have to keep pressing buttons.
