Question about IOGear GCS632U 2-port KVM Switch

Did you figure out your KVM?

I have the EXACT same problem you had. As soon as i hooked up my external hard drive (to a USB on a completely different USB port, no less...) the keyboard port stopped working. The keyboard works in the mouse port, but nothing will work in the keyboard port.

Did you ever figure this out?

Have you tried connecting the mouse to the keyboard port? If yes, is it working? You mentioned about your hard drive, if you connect your USB hard drive is that the only time the keyboard port won't work? or the keyboard port doesn't work with/without the connected external hard drive?

If you tried to connect your mouse to the keyboard port and still it doesn't work. Power cycle meaning unplug the KVM from the CPU, monitor, keyboard and mouse. Then wait for about 30seconds before reconnecting again. If you still encounter the same problem that the keyboard port won't work then it means that keyboard port is defective. Replace it.

I've got a 4 port switch with two computers hooked up - a desktop and a Lenovo Thinkpad R60 laptop - the desktop works perfect but when I switch to the laptop only the keyboard works - no video or mouse

The Thinkpad does not divert the video automatically to the external monitor via the KVM switch, you need to divert the video by pressing on the Fn key and the press the F7 key to toggle between the Thinkpad's LCD screen and the video port/external monitor. You may need to use a separate USB mouse connected to the Thinkpad.

Windows: USB Dongle shows up in Device Manager as Disk Drives: KVM vmDisk USB Device, and DVD/CD-ROM Drives: KVM vmDisk USB Device. Steals drive letters I need. How to get around this? have uninstalled...

Hi Bruce:
Sorry to hear that you are having problems. If you still want to use the device, you can assign drive letters to you other devices that do not disrupt the use of you KVM switch. Using device manager, you can change drive letters on all drives except your hard drive, usually drive 0.

Right click on you "My Computer" Icon

A menu will open

Chose "Manage"

The Computer Management window will open

The Computer Management window is broken down into 3 sections. The first section on the left side of the window shows a menu. Disk Management is on the lower portion of the menu.

The right side is separated into two sections, top and bottom. The top portion shows a list of active drives on the computer. The lower portion shows all drives connected to the computer. CD or DVD drives that have not disk will not show as active drives on the top section, but can be seen in the lower section.

The lower section will show the drive description, drive size and drive condition (online or off line) in small box on the left side of that section. Disk drives will designate a "Drive" and a number. Drive 0 is usually your internal hard drive. Then it would list drive 1, drive 2, etc, depending on how many internal and external drive sources you have connected to your computer. Then it will list your CD drives and generally show their drive letter assignments.

Next to the smaller section described above, is a larger section which shows the driver letter, size of the driver and condition (if working correctly will show "healthy")

This is the area you can right click and get a menu that will allow you to open, explore, mark the partition as active, change the driver letter, format the drive or delete a partition. (A note of caution here. Changing the driver letter on your main hard drive partition will cause windows to stop functioning. The main hard drive, or hard drive partition, is normally given the letter "C".) A hard drive may show two or more partitions with separate drive letters designated for each partition.

As for uninstalling the KVM device, if you want to completely remove all files from your computer, do a search (off the start menu) and search for *KVM vmDisk USB Device".

The delete all the files that are found in the search.

Let me know if I can assist you further or you need any clarification on my instructions.

is that a Mouse/keyboard combo ? If so, try with a standalone Mouse and a keyboard. If the Keyboard and Mouse need Special Drivers the solution might not work neither.

I hope that helped.

Have a GCS634U KVM that keeps failing to switch. acts like it lost the keyboard

This GCS634U was designed to work with USB keyboards and mice.

First, you need to make sure that your using a direct USB keyboard (no PS/2 to USB adapter).

Second, connect the keyboard directly to the computer and make sure that it's working correctly.

Third, check the connection between the KVM switch and the computers. Try to connect the USB cables of your KVM into different USB ports of the computers.

Last, try to use different USB keyboard to see if the issue is the KVM or the keyboard.

Try to power cycle the KVM switch. Disconnect the KVM from the computers and make sure that there's no even one cable connected to the computers.

Leave the KVM switch disconnected for 10 minutes, then plug it back in. Reboot one computer first and wait until it's fully rebooted. Turn on the second one untill all computers are fully booted up.

If same problem occur, then you need to contact IOGEAR and have them RMA the device.

Thank you and good luck!

Usage of KVM 2-Port USB between 'thin client' and 'Desktop' stopt

KVM are not the most reliable and will fail sometimes. The quickest way to get it back is to plug into a different USB port for the one that is active.

DELL STARTUP

There was problem at one time with IOGear KVMs not working correctly with the USB chipset on the Dell motherboards. This problem was resolved by using a USB hub between the KVM cable and the computer. The user could take the USB portion of the KVM cable and plug it into a USB hub and then take the USB hub and plug it into the Dell computer. That should help with the problem.
