Question about Canon Digital Rebel / EOS-300D Digital Camera with EF-S 18-55mm Lens

1 Answer

Canon Rebel EOS camera

I have a Canon Rebel EOS camera giving me an err99 message. I can fix it long enough to take 2-10 pictures by removing the lens, taking out the battery, messing with the shutter and taking out the memory chip. However, it doesn't solve the problem.

Err 99 is a general error msg. That is, it has to be connected to the service soft that only Canon self or an ASF has, to know more precisely the problem.
To narrow the possibilities;
-choose Av, shutter priority,
-choose the smallest aperture your lens allows, 22 or 29 or so,
-while pressing and releasing the depth-of-field preview button, (front, under the lens release) look into the lens from the front.
If the diaphragm doesn't move it has to be changed. If you have the 17-55 standard lens; throw it away and buy a better one instead of paying a repair. You'd be better off.

If you have the Err msg with several different lenses the problem is in the body itself, often the shutter. Check also your PINs in the CF-slot. If one PIN is toching another; break off the bent one and normally you can go on, the PINs are almost all doubled.

When i take a picture a err99 comes up and says turn camera on and off or take battery out and reinsert

error 99 comes in canon when the lens contacts are dirty, remove the lens from body and clean the golden contacts ,with a pencil rubber eraser, both on the camera and the lens as well.there is a firmware update for 1000d recently released, available free on canon site, with detailled instruction ho to upgrade camera firmware.
if you find problem to upgrade just comment i will try to help.
even if this dosent solve try a different lens and see whether it is ok.
if at a rare case this dosent solve your problem the internal flexible strip inside camera is broken and needs professional service from canon or good repaire center

Err 99

Hello hemantp. This error code in this model indicates that the lens electrical contacts are dirty or slightly oxidized. To clean them you will need a common pencil with a clean eraser on the end and a lens cloth.

Detach the lens from the camera and hold it so that the lens' gold contacts are pointing down. Lightly "erase" their exposed surfaces and then clean them with the lens cloth to remove any debris.

Do the same with the gold contacts inside the camera body. Although this is a wee bit more challenging, you can do it by holding the camera so that the lens opening points down. That way no debris will fall inside as you clean. Joe

I have the same problem with err99

The lens contacts are oxidized or dirty. The contacts are used to communicate from the camera micorpocessor to the lens, etc.
Turn OFF camera.
Remove the lens
Using a pencil eraser, clean each contact on each lens and the camera body, taking care not to allow debris enter the camera.
Wipe contacts witha a soft cloth after "erasing".

This is an old trick from computer add-on cards.
See this discussion about the err99 error:

hope this works!

ERR 99

Err 99 usually means your lens contacts are dirty either on the lens itself or on the camera.

To isolate the cause of the issue, do the following: -
1. Turn off the camera.
2. Remove the lens, battery, and CF card.
3. Allow the camera to sit without power for approximately 20 minutes.
4. Insert only a fully charged battery, and turn on the camera.
5. Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture.

Does the “ERR 99" message appear? If so, the camera may be faulty and requires a service. If it does not, then: -
1. Turn off the camera.
2. Insert the CF card.
3. Turn on the camera.
4. Format the CF card in the camera.
5. Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture.

Does the “ERR 99" message appear? If so, then the CF card is faulty. Try a different card. If the message does not appear: -
1. Turn off the camera.
2. Clean the gold contacts on the lens by GENTLY rubbing them with a pencil eraser or soft cloth. Keeping the camera face pointing down, also clean the gold contacts on the camera, being careful that you do not let any debris fall into the camera body.
3. Reattach your lens.
4. Turn on the camera.
5. Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture.

If the “ERR 99" message only appears when one particular lens is attached, then that lens should be examined by a service technician.
If you see the “ERR 99" with a different Canon lens attached, then the camera is faulty and should be serviced.

Contact Canon - some makes of lens which are not Canon are not electronically compatible for various reasons, and can actually damage the camera. So, get using the phone and check if it is compatible before doing anything else - but personally, I would not use the lens until I find out
