It its the phone with manual button phone, then a the hard rest option is only available if the phone is working( in the phone settings option) otherwise the only remaining option is to take the phone to a technician who will install a new custom ROM. The process is hard so to explain it here will be impossible now. I am sorry I haven't helped much

I had the same problem even after I exchanged the phone for a new one. The problem seems to be related to Mobile TV and the SD memory. When I removed my 2GB SD memory, the problem has not reoccurred. I recently installed a 512MB SD memory chip and so far I have not experienced the problem.

ok the exacct same thing happened to my phone... what i did was i kept taking out the battery, and seeing if my phone would work. there r few things that can happen everytime you take out the battery aand put it back in:
-it will show the menu button (the bottom left button on your phone) in black and white
-itll show the red x again
-the backlight might or might not turn on
-itll start up and work normally
these things will happen everytime u restart ur phone affterwards, and, usually, ur phone, even if it starts up, will go really slowly and eventually freeze, forcing u to repeaat the battery cycle.
after a while, it became worse, but, after fdoing thte battery thing over and over, it finally started up, and took me to a reboot screen, where it showed me a tiny clip art pic of a sidekick with a =P face that was broken. then it showed me the reboot screen, asking me if it wanted me to reboot, and, afercliking yes, it starteed working again

What firmware version do you have? Go to "Menu | Settings & Tools | 0. Phone Info | 2. SW/HW Version" and check the {SW Version] shown.
I'm on Verizon, and I've got firmware version 05 (shown as "VX920V05")
Two possible things to try that I've seen suggested:
(1) get a new software update if you don't have the latest version. This has to be done at a Verizon store - they take your phone and updated it with the new firmware;
(2) Turn off, remove battery, and check battery contacts. If the battery is only making intermittent contact, or if it disconnects briefly when shocked or bounced, this could cause the phone to power down. Clean contacts with a clean eraser (blow out the eraser-dust bits...) and try again.
I've seen both of these suggested, and some people who have claimed one or the other worked, but also some who have tried these and still have the problem. So if one or both of these don't work, you could take the phone back and ask for an exchange.
