SOURCE: WD 250 GB external hard drive is not being detected by system

Hi !

First check if your WD is running (spinning), no matter if the blue light is on. Can you hear it close with your ear, or feel vibrations on your hand when it starts.

If it runs, then check/replace the USB cable you are using with another.
Check the Power supply if it gives necessary power.

If you are familliar with disassembling/assembling, then open and remove the HDD from the box and try to connect the disc directly to your PC (using another HDD Data/Power cables).

If it runs, and you can acces it, then something is wrong with the Box.

If it doesn't, then the HDD is broken or damaged.

Please note that if your device is under warranty, DO NOT open the box ! Contact your seller for service/replacement instructions.

Regards.

SOURCE: WD external hard disk appears on disk manager but not on my computer nor on disk management

Hi guys,

I don't know if this will help you but just had same infuriating problem with my Western Digital Essential Book 250GB.
I wiped my PC and reinstalled windows and hey presto! It couldn't see my drive and I tried for a while pulling out the USB and trying different ports...
I connected it to my laptop and got the same problem, had a fit and pulled the mains plug and then plugged it back in... And it kicked in! I put it back on the PC (USB in but power off, then plugged it in the mains) and it kicked in there too.
Therefore I suggest trying the drive with another system to boot it. Once the laptop recognised it, so then did the PC. Also try unplugging it completely, putting the USB in THEN the power supply...

Might have just been a fluke but hope it helps someone here...!

SOURCE: Write Protection on Hard Drive

I think your machine could be affected with a virus. Most of the viruses do that to block you to access the hard disk or any external media. Try this good antivirus that i have come across the net its a demo version that works for 30 days but it will do you good.

You shouldn't have any problems. The computer uses SATA drives and the drive is SATA and is also a 2.5" laptop HDD. Make sure that you have a way to install an OS , etc

Not able to access my WD 1600 BEVE external hard disk.

Make sure your have it connected properly, if there is instructions reference them. If that doesn't take care of the problem make sure you have a driver installed for it.
What operating system are you running? Considering about 90% of PCs run Windows I'm going to assume that. To get to the Device Manager where you can check the drivers follow these steps:
•

To open Device Manager, click Start, and then click Control Panel. Click Performance and Maintenance, and then click System. On the Hardware tab, click Device Manager.
•

For information about using Device Manager, on the Action menu in Device Manager, click Help.

Please let me know if that does not solve your issue.

Hello Expert, I'm using WD1600BEVS that is my external hard drive. It has been working well with my laptop, but suddenly my laptop hasn't recognized it. I tried with other computers, but they didn't...

An external storage-device has four major components:

* the USB cable

* the power-adapter

* the disk-drive inside the enclosure

* the USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.

One of these components has failed.

Try a different USB cable.

Try connecting to a different USB port on your computer.

Try connecting to a USB port on a different computer.

Take a "multi-meter" and measure both the voltage and amperage output from the AC adapter, and compare with the specifications on the label on the adapter.

Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and then connect it as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if it works at all.

Purchase a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.

Get the part-number and serial-number from the label on your disk-drive, and access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status", to see if they will replace the device, at minimal cost to you.

Note that W.D. has a "Customer Loyalty" program -- you can buy a new W.D. device, through the W.D. web-site, at a significant discount.

There exist commercial "data recovery" services that can try to repair your device, just long-enough to rescue and copy your files. For example, see: https://services.seagate.com/index.aspx?lng=en-US for a "no data - no charge" guarantee.

one bad/faulty lead can lead to problems of this nature
replace all the leads that attach to your hard drive including electrical extensions + IDE,SATA and the ones that attach from your motherboard to hard drive
make sure all leads that are attached to your drives dvd\cd 3 1/2 inch floppy have secure connections and are not faulty or just replace them they are probably old and faulty ?
hope this helps

External USB Hard Disk is 120GB is not dected in winxp pc.

There are two possibilities:

The Mybook USB/ATA controller board is faulty.
In this case you can simply take apart the enclosure and mount the disk into a new enclosure. WD Mybooks are SATA, but double check the hard disk connector to ensure.

The hard disk inside is faulty.
In this case repair may be expensive. You need to locate a data recovery facility with a 'clean room' , the cost is usually more than $800.

If this happened after a power surge, then the problem is most likely a faulty controller board.

If instead you have dropped the hard disk it is possible an hard drive failure, in that case repair will be expensive.

A replacement enclosure will stfrom art about $20 on Ebay or Amazon, and must not necessarily be WD .
Check if your disk is Sata or PATA (IDE) before buying the enclosure.

I can only see 54GB out of 160GB WD drive that i just got? please help me out.

As a computer technician, Possibility #1 I'd say probably your PC is too old, and does not support bigger hard drives. Possibility #2, I'd say the disk is defective. Possibility #3, It has maybe have been not formatted properly by you or whoever owned it before you.
