Yes it is but you'll have to get the Dynamic IP from a DHCP server or a router capable of doing DHCP. If you have one of these then all you need to do is:

Control Panel
Network Connections
Double Click on the network link your using
Properties
Under the Connection uses the Following Box Click
TCP/IP
Properties
Obtain an IP Address automatically
OK

and your done. This is for XP but Vistas pretty much the same with some slight differences
Like I said before though u'll need a DHCP source external to your PC to give you an address

Address ip reset

Your IP address is a series of numbers that identify your specific computer on the Internet.
If, for some reason, you want to change your IP address, you can do so without going into the command prompt.Click "Start," "Control Panel," "Network and Internet" and "Network and Sharing Center."
Click "Change adapter settings."
Right-click the network you want to change and click "Properties."
Click the "Networking" tab.
Put a check either next to Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6) or Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) and click "Properties."
Click the radio button next to Obtain an IP Address Automatically if you want Windows to assign one, or click "Use the following IP address" to manually change it.
Enter the requested information and click "OK."

DHCP Server configuration in Linux

Linux is a UNIX based operating system. It is a server operating system. REDHAT Linux is Enterprise version of Linux. Now a day's Most of corporate sectors use red hat Linux as server in their company because it is secure very much.

Full form of DHCP "Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol. DHCP server assigns IP addresses and other network configuration information like subnet mask, broadcast address, etc to computers on a network. The DHCP assignments are the following.

Lease Request: Client broadcasts their request to DHCP server with a source address of 0.0.0.0 and a destination address of 255.255.255.255.
IP lease offer: DHCP server replies with an IP address, subnet mask, network gateway, name of the domain, name servers, duration of the lease and the IP address of the DHCP server.

Lease Selection: Client receives offer and broadcasts to al DHCP servers that will accept given offer so that other DHCP server need not make an offer.

The DHCP server then sends an ack to the client. The client is configured to use TCP/IP. Lease Renewal: When half of the lease time has expired, the client will issue a new request to the DHCP server.

Installation of DHCP server: First of all while install the RedHat Linux enterprise version server be careful about the ports and the services must be turned on. To create DHCP server in Linux first download DHCP RPM package and install with "rpm-ivh" command. Where I have done it there I have create YUM server, so easily I have download and install it by YUM (yum install dhcp version). DHCP package will locate in /usr/share/doc/at Linux file system. I copied the DHCP's files from /usr/share/doc/ to /etc/dhcpd.conf.. Then I started to configure the dhcpd.conf file to route the DHCP server in there local network. I have open the configuration file with "vi" command. Then commented out the lines from "default gateway to option netbios" because system don't read the commented lines. After that I set the range of IP address in dynamic- bootp of their local assumption of system. I have change the "next-server" with the dhcp server name and have also change the fixed address with the dhcp server IP address (end range of dynamic IP). It is very easy job to configure DHCP server. After configure the .conf file of dhcp just turn on the service with "chkconfig" command and restart the dhcp service. After that entire job I reboot the system. And after rebooting of server I turned on the other client system. While startup the client system without static IP address all of those picked up IP from dhcp server and going on successfully. I have prefer the command line mode to do the total job.
The DHCP server configure file is following:

ddns-update-style interim
ignore client-updates

subnet 192.168.1.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 {
# The range of IP addresses the server
# will issue to DHCP enabled PC clients
# booting up on the network

# Set the amount of time in seconds that
# a client may keep the IP address

default-lease-time 86400;
max-lease-time 86400;

# Set the default gateway to be used by
# the PC clients

option routers 192.168.1.1;
# Don't forward DHCP requests from this
# NIC interface to any other NIC
# interfaces

option ip-forwarding off;

# Set the broadcast address and subnet mask
# to be used by the DHCP clients

option broadcast-address 192.168.1.255;
option subnet-mask 255.255.255.0;

# Set the NTP server to be used by the
# DHCP clients

option ntp-servers 192.168.1.100;

# Set the DNS server to be used by the
# DHCP clients

option domain-name-servers 192.168.1.100;

# If you specify a WINS server for your Windows clients,
# you need to include the following option in the dhcpd.conf file:

option netbios-name-servers 192.168.1.100;

# You can also assign specific IP addresses based on the clients'
# ethernet MAC address as follows (Host's name is "laser-printer":

host laser-printer {
hardware ethernet 08:00:2b:4c:59:23;
fixed-address 192.168.1.222;
}

How to change an ip address on a compaq

If your Compaq is based on Windows then use ipconfig/release and ipconfig/renew command in the command prompt. To change the network IP address, if your IP is dynamic you can change it by resetting the modem. If it is static IP you have to contact your service provider to do it so.You can check your network IP address using the site Ip-Details.com .

I keep getting ip same address how do i fix this

You are probably using what is known as a static IP address. Ask your ISP for a regular plan with dynamic IP(changes every time your router is rebooted)

I attached a new modem to my system today. Now, if I run my system through my router I cannot connect to the internet.The cable people says my computer is running on the router ip address and thus I...

This can be complicated...eveything in your system has an IP address including the router itself. Try using your old router..if it works, then you have an IP adress issue with the new router. Also,
the routers use a scheme called the 802.11 IEEE standard. There are variations on this called 802.11a,b,g,n,etc. Not all devices will work with a 802.11n system...it is still to new. Try using the 802.11g
instead...also most routers use a system called dynamic IP addressing. This means the router automatically signs an IP address to everyuthing in your system...this can change with the addition or deletion of any device in your system...Jeff

Internet setup

few things you can try:
1. check to make sure you're getting an IP address.
2. try reloading the wireless card driver.
3. is you wireless static or dynamic? If dynamic, try configuring it with static setting.
4. If this don't work, try the wireless card on a different slot.
5. if don't work, try on a different PC to see if wireless card is working or not.
It's possible you have a bad wireless card.
good luck!!

Need to renew ip address for my emachine T3516

just right click on your local connection on the desktop by the clock and click on "repair". this should clear the cache and renew the IP addy and DNS for yur connection. OR

Follow these steps to quickly release and/or renew the Internet Protocol (IP) address of a computer running Windows XP, Windows 2000, or Windows NT. Here's How:
  1. Click the Start menu button on the Windows taskbar.
  2. Click Run... on this menu.
  3. If the computer is holding a current IP address, type 'cmd' (without the quotes) in the text box that appears. A command prompt window appears on the screen.
  4. Type 'ipconfig' (without the quotes) to view the status of the computer's IP address(es).
  5. If the computer is holding a current IP address, type 'ipconfig /release' to let go of the address.
  6. Type 'ipconfig /renew' to obtain a new IP address (whether or not the computer is holding a current address).
Tips:
  1. If it is not necessary to view the current IP addresses on a computer, simply type 'ipconfig /release' or 'ipconfig /renew' (without the quotes) in the text box that appears in Step 3.

  2. To bring a computer back onto the network after moving it to a different location, or experiencing an unexpected outage, first release, then renew the IP address. Computers on DHCP networks often (but not always) re-establish network connectivity automatically
