We have our air set at 72, but it now says that it is 77 degrees in the house. It was blowing air, but now it has stopped.

I have a similar problem with the central air. The thermostat is set at 75, but the house is 83. We stayed at a hotel last night and I turned the system off overnight. I came home this morning and flipped the AC back on. It blew cold air for a couple minutes and then shut down.

I periodically hear the click of the system turning on but then nothing happens. Any ideas? Thx.

Hi Kneil,

There could be several things causing your problem, so I will ask you some questions to narrow down the problem,

Do you have central air?
Does the system shut off before the thermostat is satisfied?
Is the evaporator coil freezing up?
Is there a float switch or other device installed to prevent over flow of condensate line?

    Hi Kelly,

What type of a/c system do you have? a split system, meaning one unit outside and one inside? Can you determine which one stays running? It could be a number of things, we need to narrow down the possibilities.

I have a older Carrier heat pump, model 38YKC060. Does anyone know how cold it will continue to work at?

Heat pumps are of little or no value at temps around 40 degrees or below. And if you use the strips it will cost a small fortune if you have relatively high electric rates as most folks do.

We have royal red furnace to heat our home. The fan dose not stop.

Details.......does the furnace function normally otherwise? Might just be a stuck fan switch. Make sure the thermostat hasn't been set on Fan ON setting or summer air circ. on older furnaces.
Find the fan switch and tap it and see if fan quits. If it does, fan switch is bad.probably. Always make sure your air circ. filter(return air to furnace) is replaced every 3 mo. or so,too. don-ohio (:^)

Thermostat set at 73degrees , turns on and off to frequently

Hello Jean Thomson,

There are several reasons air-conditioning could go on & off frequently.

Thermostats can be set with close degree function...

Assuming your temperature variances are of no importance
the THERMOSTAT can be adjusted to be less sensitive...

BUT BY FAR... the most common reason for rapid cycling
of the A/C are air leaks and poor insulation...

Your local UTILITY provider will likely have FREE (or very reasonable) thermal analysis - evaluation programs... wit supported contractor services to improve your INSULATION and reduce ENERGY CONSUMPTION.

Also you might need to consider that your A/C system is simply poorly engineered to keep your home at a comfortable temperature...

Again... there are SPECIALISTS who are capable of analyzing your existing structure... and recommending appropriate systems sizing to economically operate efficiently....

Nothing here for the uninformed noviciate... all highly technical.

Save money... Get a PROFESSIONAL ANALYSIS..

Hope this helps!!

Electric Furnace stopped running

You have one of two problems. Either the capacitor for the motor has failed or the motor has failed. I would turn off the power to the unit and see if you can locate the capacitor and remove it. An ac supply or electrical supply house can match up the capacitor. This is relatively inexpensive. Otherwise you will need a new motor.

Why can't I lower my honeywell 8500 below 67 on cool?

With a two story house you have to be aware that cold air flows downwards so any cold air coming from an ac unit will flow downstairs( normally down the stairway) so unless you can close off the down stairs then the up stairs unit will be cooling downstairs as well. Ac units have a thermostat located in the air intake and it cools until the cold air has risen to that point. In effect the space above the ac unit will be hotter than the floor. Knowing how they work ,you can see that the upstairs unit will never reach the set temperature because the cold air is continually heating from the house and will never get to the top thermostat.
So your solutions are
1-- fit controls that restrict the cold air from leaving the upper floor (Doors)
2--don't run the upper ac unit unless you are living up there (waste of money
)3 place an ac in each upper room and keep the room door closed

Why does home central air conditioner will only cool to 80 degrees?

Because it is low on Freon. Do not run it low or the compressor wont be able to cool and you will burn it up. If it has run more than 1 hour in 90 degree heat the compressor is probably already damaged. Have a HVAC professional look at it, but if you were still using id plan for the worse, a complete replacement.
