Question about Technics SL-1210 Turntable

1210 Constantly Skipps

I have recently bought a 1210 and i am finding that it constantly skips. I got some brand new cartridges and needles for it and theses don't help. I have played about with all the settings and it just doent work. If you put a weight like a coin on top of the cartridge, then it works. But the signal sent to my mixer is very week. Not strong enough to be able to mix. If you take the weight off the cartridge the signal strength goes right up but it then starts skipping again. The weight on the back in on 0 and if you adjust is at all then the tone arm doent even tough the vinyl, the height is also very low around 0. I really don't know what to do from here.

More than likely your tonearm is damaged. There is a small screw towards the rear of the tonearm. If you loosen this it may solve your problem. However, please be careful, because once you adjust this screw, it is very hard to get it right. That screw is known as a 'conical' screw, and has a cone shaped tip. This tip sits on top of 4 very small ball bearings, which are held in place by a very thin piece of sheet metal. If any of these are damaged, you will have to replace the tonearm. If they are not damaged, and your conical screw just became misaligned, then it is possible to salvage your tonearm. However, be very careful when turning this screw. Turn it counterclockwise very slowly, about a hair of a turn... yes, I said a HAIR of a turn. Then put the needle back on the record and observe what happens. If the problem persists, turn it a little bit more. Keep doing it until the problem is solved. You will eventually have to have the tonearm replaced, as this screw will start to loosen over time, once it's been adjusted.

If you look at the cartridge that the stylus fits in you should see a make and model number for the cartridge. Put that into Google and the rest of your questions should be answered.
You don't need to phone anyone.

The cartridge arm does not go back to the off position.

it's a "manual" turntable so this is normal. You would need to buy an "automatic" turntable to have the arm return back when done.

Tone arm skipping records.

The anti skate adjustment. And if you scratch @ all....move the weight all the way in and take off the little extra one that screws in on the back. Also a great tracking needle is a M44G.

Basically, have just bought 1210's mark 5's one of them, the tone arm makes the Brand New cartridge skip when it gets to certain points, its because the tone arm sort of swivels, like something is not...

i have this case now, i bought some mk2's. If u have a record that is single sided, put the side that dosent play on the slip matt, put the needle on it...add more weight if needed. it should stay where u put it, if it dosent...then it should be a case of moving the anti-skate, untill you are satisfied that it is not moving anymore. If u dont have a record like that, like i dont....i took the stylus off...and the slipmatt off...and let the cart run on the platter at 33, i hope it helps your problem, if i dosent then i would take it to a technician.

Sears Tape deck/Turn table skipping!

Hi the pennies will mess up the stylus. There should be an anti skate setting at the back of the turn table, a round adjustable bit with numbers, increase the anti skate and then use the balance weigth (weight right at the back of the arm that turns to get the weight right. Set the anti skate with the tone arm light, then increase the weight a bit. Hope that helps

It sounds as if the cartridge has been dislodged on the end of the tone arm Have you tried setting up the cartridge alignment. A badly aligned cartridge will cause exactly this problem.
