The mixer is not designed to be disassembled or serviced. When it breaks (and it will) Sunbeam will replace it under warranty if you are lucky or you toss it in the trash.

That said, start by prying out the beater release button. There are two small screws under it and one between the beater inserts to remove the chrome front cover. The large black dial at the rear can be pulled straight off, revealing more screws. The motor and drive assembly in the top cannot be removed without disconnecting wiring from the circuit board in the base.

Housing unit

That is usually caused by a stripped gear. It is hard to give you a good idea of what to check without a model number.
If it is a 4.5-5 quart regular mixer then it will most likely be a bad worm gear: This would be a fairly easy repair. You will also want to check the other gears to make sure they are not damaged.
However if it is a 5 or 6 quart Professional mixer it will be more involved than that. You will want to take the mixer apart, inspect each gear (you will need to clean off the grease). Any gears that are worn damaged or nicked will need to be replaced. Also check the bearings, and the retainer pin. If these are bent or damaged they may need to be replaced. While you are in the mixer check to see if the transmission housing is cracked, if it is replace it with the new metal housing. If all of the above are in good shape check your planetary assembly, it is pressed together and could become loose causing the same issue.
Please let me know if you have any questions.

Commercial kitchenaid mixer will not switch on? I have replaced the amp on the plug and carbon brushes (putting them in the correct way) and still not joy. Any ideas about the problem? I was given the...

Yes i would open the back cover and try the adjusting screws on the speed control plate, I have repaired several mixers just by turning the two top screws a quarter turn counter clockwise or just the bottom one a quarter turn clockwise.
You will have to check the plug it may be damaged and make sure your wall outlet is working and not operated by a wall switch that may be turned off. seems silly I know but check anyway. let us know if this helped, there are other things to check but i would start there first

I have a Sunbeam Mixmaster 2351 Heritage Series that the speed dial control numbers fade. Sunbeam replaced my mixer but want to prevent the same problem for reoccurring, Any suggestions?

I would propose to solution to your problem,
one. Try getting some clear contact and cutting a a square or circle a little more than the size of the dial. Removed the dial if possible and later clear contact over the surface.
Two. Get some clear nail polish and cover the markings on the dial with thin coat.
Warning warning warning!!! (Test the nail polish on a surface that is not exposed, for example underneath) to make sure that the nail polish does not react with the surface of the mixer.

Does this machine ever need grease or oil?

No! Typically these are permanently lubricated at the factory.

Unless an expert that does repair work on this type of machine comes in and says something different. I would avoid opening this machine up and adding any kind of grease or oil. It may wind up in your next cake! :)
