If you are using a network cable to connect two computers without a hub, then the cable has to be a CROSS OVER cable. You can't use a standard network cable.
If you connect more then two computers to make a network of computers then you must use a hub and standard network cables.

you plug one end in "tester" and other end in "remote" and if it's all good and you are testing straight-through cable it should go from 1 to 8 in sequence. short cable is test (good cable) to show you if there is a problem with your unit. Whatever you see with short cable you should see with your cable.

I am going to connect two pc's together useing a male to male usb cable, the problem I have is that one pc is xp pro and one is windows 7 64bit Home premiem. Any help would appreciated. Regards,Gary

There are several different kinds of USB-USB cables on the market. The one used to connect two PC's is called "bridged" (or "USB networking cable"), because it has a small electronic circuit in the middle allowing the two PCs to talk to each other. There are the so-called A/A USB cables that, in spite of having two standard USB connectors at each end, don't have a bridge chip and cannot be used to connect two PCs. In fact, if you use an A/A USB cable you can burn the USB ports of your computers or even their power supplies. So, these A/A USB cables are completely useless. A/B USB cables are used to connect your computer to peripherals such as printers and scanners, so they also won't fit your needs.

Thanks

Connect two RJ45 cables. Should I use an inline coupler, or crossed line coupler

Hello, If you are using the coupler to just extend the cable(like from a switch/home router to a computer), I would recommend the inline coupler. If you are using it to connect two computers, then use the crossed. This is assuming you are using two straight-through (patch) cables, or to x-over cables, which can be checked by taking both ends of the cable with the clips facing away from you, and seeing if the wires follow the same pattern. If they do not, the it is a x-over cable (unlikely if you just got the cables from the store). If you have one of each, then do the exact opposite. In the situation that its connecting a switch/home router to a computer, then its not as important due to the fact that most switches and home routers have a feature called auto-sense, where if the type is connected, they can simply auto-correct it, but pcs do not have this feature, so if you are connecting two of them directly together, then you must have the right coupler for the cables you are using (along with the right manual configurations on each computer, which is something that I can help you with if need be).If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me, or simply reply.

When you connect the laptop to the router are you using a network cable?
When you connect two computers such as your laptop and the xbox using a network cable you need a crossover cable not a standard network cable.
If you use a network hub you can connect two or more computers together using the standard network cables.

How to use cross cable and straight cables in network

ok, i think what you mean is this.  Crossover cable is for connecting 2 computers together without the need for a router.  also called pc-to-pc.  Straight cables need the use of a router or hub to connect 2 computers together.  Hope this helps, if not let me know more info.

Lan cable Setting for Switch & PC to PC LAN Connection.

If you are asking about connecting two computers together with a hub or switch, plug them into the switch/hub with standard patch cables (cat 5e or cat 6).

If you are asking about connecting two computers together directly using a LAN cable, then you will need a "Crossover" cable (cat 5e) wired specially (oranges transposed at one end for the common -B pattern) for direct LAN connection.

Networking

Hello koolboyvipin, you and your friend can connect your computers together using CAT 5 cable in cross-over mode[pin1A to pin3B, pin2A to pin6B, pin3A to pin1B, pin6A to pin2B].
To connect more computers, you need a hub, but I prefer a switch because switches are more intelligent in data receiving/transferring. But your CAT5 connection between your computers and the hub/switch must be straight cables[pin1A to pin1B, pin2A to pin2B etc.]
I believe this would satisfy your problem.
For further enquiries, kindly post your requests to our forum.

Best regards,
Tony

Cable router

Make sure that you have followed the router manufacturer's instructions to configure the router to work with Virgin. Typically this would include entering your Virgin username and password into the connection section of the router's configuration menus.
