Rear projection TV displays a shadow on one corner or side of the screen.

This tip may be helpful only if your rear projection TV is displaying a darker shadow on one portion of the screen. If the shadow shape and size will not vary, that means that there is probably a detached mirror in the device called Light Tunnel, located inside your TV.

Most rear projection TV works projecting the light from the internal lamp on the screen. Before reaching the screen , the light will pass through a 'pipe' whose internal surface is covered in rectangular mirrors, located all over the tunnel surface.

A quite common fault is caused by one of the mirror detaching from the the light tunnel internal surface , and falling down or hanging in there. This will be seen on the display as a darker shade located near to one side of the screen.

The light tunnel is located in the light engine. To repair the problem the TV must be disassembled by a technician. Accessing and disassembling the light engine is not a repair that can be done by the owner.

Click here to view pictures of a light engine for a Samsung rear projection model. The tunnel is the optical device located in the light engine.

If you are a technician, to replace the light tunnel you will have to take apart the light engine, that apart of being quite a sensitive optical device, is also the most expensive part on a rear projection TV.

In that case you may find useful the service bulletin posted below, that is illustrating how to replace the light tunnel on a light engine for Samsung rear projection TV. Please be aware, that if you attempt doing this operation without sufficient knowledge and experience, you may damage your TV set beyond repair, as the light engine is very expensive.

Something smoked and smelled in the back and now picture has shadow and texts are worst?

Your convergence board has shorted out. I have seen this problem in my TV repair. I have not repaired this TV in quite some time. But I assure you I have answered your question. The convergence board is located in the back of the TV. It should be located on the right rear side. It will take some real effort to remove. If I remember..there are two sets of fuses and they will be burned. You will know you have removed the correct board. Then you may send this board off to PTS electronics for a rebuild. Thanks for asking and show all hands of support!

I recently was given a mitsubishi ws-55511 55 in tv it has the blinking green timer light that keeps flashing what might be the problem and any idea on repair cost?

First you can try pushing the reset button located on front of tv where power button is located. If that fails to correct the problem then I would suspect the DM module has failed. They are not available for replacement. Some shops rebuild them by replacing the defective capacitors with some success others might send it to a company such as PTS to be rebuilt also with some success. Repair prices will vary from 275.00 - 375.00 depending on your location

Hello, I have a problem with my sony rear projection tv. When I try to turn it on the standby lights blink but it odes not turn on. I turned it on using display 5 vol- power and it did turn on and know it...

You need to count the number of blinks between the pause. Most common is 9 blinks. Also- after you press POWER, do you hear a "click" or not? If no click and 9 blinks, you probably have a "zero cross failure" and have two options:

(1) Replace the "G" board (part # A1054157A) or have it repaired (they repair it on eBay for about $40. You ship them the bad board and they either repair and return or ship you a different repaired board) A new board costs about $80- without having to send them your board.

(2) Repair the board yourself- by replacing the two diodes on the "G" Board - (D6301 which is on top- by the small transformer) and (D116 which is an SMT component on the bottom of the board- it takes VERY steady hands and a good solder iron). The parts should cost less than $25 and are available on eBay by searching for "sony a1054157a".

My sony projection tv has bouble image. can i

Well repair of TV depends on your own skills and if you have any experience of electronics stuff repair then it would not be difficult. This kind of repair requires good parts soldering in PCB expertise.

Your Sony KP-51HW40 seems have problem with convergence out ICs (two ICs) that would be replaced. Both ICs STK392-560 are located on D Board and available in Part Store.

Lines on the screen all times

You may try connecting other video source to the TV to ensure whether the issue is related to the TV. If the issue persists with all the video source then the issue may be related to hardware malfunctioning of the TV and service will be required. In this case, you may contact Sony Service Center to get the TV diagnosed serviced. If the TV is in warranty then service will be offered under warranty terms and conditions.
I would like to forward a link to a page where you can find a location to get your Sony TV repaired, the Sony repair cost, and to initiate the repair procedure provided you're located in the U.S.

Big time red shift right and flicker on the red.

Check this link to see how the ICs look like. The STK ICs on this TV are located on the right hand side once the back of the TV is removed.
In regards to the resistors, there is not a path how they failed because that will depend on how the STKs failed, I would still suggest to check all the 1.8, 3.3 and 4.7 ohms resistors as well the solder joints around the area.
