"crud" around the bottom of dishwasher, around drain
If this buildup is external, and around wet areas, it may be a rubberised seal which has been applied wet to seal leakage. This is done in the factory using tube products like Selleys ar SikaFlex liquid silicon sealant and once it hardens its like a black rubber seal. Also, sometimes rubber plugs that are quite old and have taken a lot of heat can perish, see if there is a ridge arount the interior if that may be the case. If so, buy a full replacement kit. Try to burn a small amount - if it smells like rubber, its meant to be there.
What I really think it is though, because it wiped off, is the following. If the crud is internal, and especially around internal stainless steel and rubber seal areas - It is normal dirt/soap/food residue and it happens to every dishwasher after regular use. Its difficut to remove from holes, but if you try to do so, only use a wooden shaslick /squewer stick, which does not conduct electricity. The risk of electrocution is very low from the interior of a dishwasher, as there should not be any open holes other than the drain present at all, but if there are, it never pays to investigate or clean any opening on an electric machine with metal implements.
If this muck is internal, buy a commercial dishwashing 'clean and de-alkalising kit'. You run the dishwasher empty with one of these in it through a full cycle and it eradicates all scale and buildup. Once its broken it all up, it flushes the lot out with the final rinse, the interior then looks like it did the day you got the machine. Do this every 6 months to prevent additional build up.
