Use the margin release or mr key to be able to get past the current margins. Position the carrier to where you want the margin then press left or right margin set. Lawrence

How to reset the margins on Brother EM-530

On most electronic typewriters you change the margins by pressing the code button and holding down the press r margin or l margin on the key board. You want the carrier to be where you want the margin set. To set margins beyond the right or left margin move the carrier to the margin and press margin release to go past the margin. Then press code left or right margin.

I bought a --brother AX-400 electronic typewriter at yard sale... please help me set left and right margins...

Move the carrier to the desired position for the new left or right margin using "backspace" or "space"

To move beyond the position of a current margin, first position the carrier on the margin and press "alt +m rel"

When the carrier is on the desired position, press "alt + l mar" (if you are setting the left margin), or "alt + r mar" (if you are setting the right margin.)
The minimim distance between the left and right margins is two inches

How to change the pitch?

Here ya go...

Margins and Tabs
Margins and tabs for both Type Mode and Mem Mode are set in Type
Mode, but can be changed in Mem Mode when text is recalled for
editing. Margins and tabs are set using the typing scale which appears
on the display in Type Mode. A blinking cursor indicates the typing
position. The letter “L” indicates your left margin setting. The letter “R”
indicates your right margin setting.
NOTE: In Mem Mode, the margins and tabs used when the text
is created will be saved with the text and recalled with it,
even if they have been changed.
Margins
In Type Mode, to signal that you are near the right margin, the
typewriter will beep 5 spaces before the margin. In Mem Mode, the text
will wrap automatically when you print.
Margins are preset depending on the pitch setting, which is the number
of characters per inch. They are:
10 Pitch 12 Pitch 15 Pitch
(Pica) (Elite) (Micro)
Left Margin 12 14 18
Right Margin 72 86 108
New margin settings remain until changed again.
1. Move the Mode Selector to Type. A typing scale appears on
the display.
2. Move the cursor using the Spacebar or Back Space to the desired left
margin setting on the scale.
3. Press Margin.
4. Move the cursor using the Spacebar to the desired right margin
setting on the typing scale.
5. Press Code + Margin. A beep confirms each new margin setting.
6. You can change to Mem Mode, if desired.

Take care,

Cannot margin release ]3] to extend into hot aone

HOLD DOWN THE "ALT" KEY THEN HIT THE 3 KEY THEN USE THE BACK SPACE OR SPACEBAR TO REPOSITION THE PRINTHEAD. THIS WILL ALLOW YOU TO MOVE PAST THE MARGIN ONE TIME. IF YOU WANT THE MARGIN SET IN A DIFFERENT POSITION - MOVE THE PRINTHEAD TO WHERE YOU WANT THE MARGIN SET, HOLD DOWN THE ALT KEY AND PUSH THE 4(L MAR) OR 5 (R MAR)

What keys do I use the change the left and right margins?

You set the margins by putting the printhead where you want the margin set, and holding down the CODE key, push the key under where L MAR or R MAR is printed, (above the top keys on the keyboard) depending on whether you want to set the right or left margin.
If you want to set the left margin to the left of where it's set, hold down the CODE key and push the key under MAR REL. Then using the Backspace (or spacebar, if you backspace too far) position the printhead where you want the mar. set and holding down the CODE key, hit the key under L MAR.
Setting the right margin works the same way.

Setting right margain

some typewriters just have a beep to let you know the right margin is coming. the keyboard might not lock up when it gets to the right margin. you might be able to type right through it. also you may be setting it too close to the left margin.
