Please take out memory stick from camera and power up camera and check still gives format error? If no further error then put memory stick back in camera and press Menu >> Format >> OK to format memory stick. That will delete all data on memory stick and refresh it for new photos.
I would first make sure that your memory stick is not full, and if it is I would upload your images to a computer and then format your memory card in the camera. If this is not the problem I would make sure that your memory stick is not set to the write protect setting, by looking at the write protect switch on the back of your memory stick. If you have a computer with a memory card reader that takes the stick. insert it into the computer and goto my computer find the memory stick drive letter and format it their then retry the stick in the camera. also try to go into the cameras menu and try formatting it their if you cannot format the stick it is very possible it is bad.
