Hello,

I have an older IBM thinkpad that I haven't used for awhile and when I start it up I get a blank screen with a lock symbol on it, I have never put in a password and do not know how to get past this, I try to enter into Bios Setup also and I get the same black screen with a white lock on it asking for a password, Is there a way to get past this?

- I have an OS CD but am unable to get the computer to boot from the CD, I get the black screen with the lock symbol and cannot get past that, Do you know how I can get past that?

- I tried Putting in the CD and hitting F4 and nothing, I still get the same screen. To reset the bios - How can I do that if I cannot get into the bios screen. All I get is the black screen with the lock symbol on it. Thanks

Format this unit Reinstall OS and that should take care of any issues.
If you have the original disk then that will make it a lot easier

Let me know if that helps or if you need more help

- WHat OS are you running???
XP???

Put the disk in and power down and reboot
When the power on is started hit F4 untill something recognises,
if I am right the disk will ask you what you want to instal???

for this one there a few steps to cover,,,

First to save all your info from this machine you will have to take the hard drive to another machine to extract all the important info.,
Should be a simple copy and paste process, folder to folder

This is a dual purpose check too,
It will let your see if the drive is ok ,
and to check if password locked too.

Next is to reset the bios,
change to default settings and reboot
the old settings may still be setup so this will reset them.

once this is done then the install should be straight forward,

if you need more help just ask,
Hope this helps ,
Thanks

- Try F2 or F8 at start up

- The best solution I can offer is take to a computer repair person,
They can address any issues when they have the machine in front of them,

The macine may have other faults we are not aware off.
