Question about Cobra 29 WX NW ST 40-Channels Base CB Radio

1 Answer

Screams My cb makes a loud high pitched scream. It happens about once or twice a month, sometimes when severe weather is in the area and sometimes not. It lasts about a full minute and even continues if I turn the unit off. I don't have control of the volume of the scream, it is very loud. Is this common with this model?, is it the weather alert?, and can I disable it?

Do you have weather bands on your cb ? you must turn it to the off position (weather bands) or you will here the test signal from
noaa . now you will not get weather alerts.

High pitch whine occasionally coming from CB even when it's turned off. It is so loud that it has left my ears ringing for days. even when its off it will light up when this happens

Most CB radios when switched off at the set are still on stand by mode. and can come to life near a powerful transmitter, fit a toggle switch in the power line going to CB to cut out the stand mode.

I can transmit & receive all channels but when i try to transmit on 40 i get a loud pitch on speaker

Sounds like the VCO is out of range on the high end of the frequency range which causes the synthesizer to go out of lock on channel 40. If you tweak the VCO coil slightly it might lock again. Make sure it still works on channel 1 after you have tweaked the VCO coil.

I have had my radio for a while and now just out of the blue the weather band stopped recieving or something, the rest works fine the wx led even lights up just no audio

If there is static noise, then it's probably not the weather board. We have had something like this happen in our area....

The closest weather station to here up and quit transmitting. The transmitter died after years of use. So all of a sudden there was not weather station. It was out for months.

If there is no noise at all, then there is probably something wrong with the weather board. I don't mess too much with weather boards my self. You could look at the weather channel selection knob and look and make sure all the wires are connected, also the switch to turn on weather.

When I depress the transmit button the cb puts a squel out to other radios on the same channel yet I have no problem hearing transmissions from the other radios

It sounds like the mic either has a problem, or its wired incorrectly for that radio.

Try a new mic, and make sure it's wired for that radio.

Also, if you have talk back then it's too loud, or your mic gain is too high.

The type of radio would help me know weather or not it could be the mic wiring.

When the radio is powered up a a constant buzzing noise is present. This noise is at the same audible tone when the radio is set to any volume level and whether it is set to CB, or weather selection... ...

If this is a high-pitched tone it probaly is from the DC-AC inverter that provides the high voltage to light up the front panel. Normally, this is barely audible, but I've seen a few that are loud enough to be annoying. It may be possible to install a small filter in the power line to the inverter, inside the radio. I've never tried this but if the inverter is the source of the noise, this will be the most practical way to isolate ite & eliminate the problem.
This should onlty be attempted byan experienced CB technician.
