Sony Handycam DCR HC42 Video Capturing

How can I get my videos from the tape to my computer, which has Microsoft Vista- I am not very good at this and I keep hitting dead ends! I cannot download picture package which came with the camera to vista and when I try to get the computer to recognize my camera it seems to need the picture package to be there!

Is that the same as an i.Link cable? I read about those, but it doesn't appear that my camera came with one- according to the book. If I go to Best Buy, can I get one there?

You should be using a firewire cable to transfer video from cam to comp-cable comes 4 pin to 6 or 4 pin to 4 pin use 4 x4 for laptop and 4 x 6 for tower-make sure comp has port-not usb which is only for stills-once cam is connected or before open movie maker in vista and it should work or connect cam and computer should recognize it

i link is sonys name for 4 pin to 4 pin firewire cable-no camcorders include it-buy any 4 to 4 pin cable you can-sony more expensive and no better than best buy geek squad or dynbex brand-if computer has same size plug as cam it's 4x4-if larger on comp it's 4x6 pin

Sony Handycam DCR-HC42 Mini DV not recognized by Windows 7

win vista and win 7doesn't support usb streaming. the usb driver for this model would not be compatible with your computer's OS. although, you were able to download PMB still this wouldn't work, it's basically an alternative software that you can use with the newer OS. still the device driver would not be installed. and you would get a message that "ilink connection is not detected". the reason you get that is bec the camcorder and the software is intended for use with the dv (ilink or ieee1394) connection. so if your computer has an ieee1394 card and you have a compatible ilink cable, then your good to go,it should be a plug-and-play connection (no drivers required). all you need then would be a video capturing software (like win moviemaker) to transfer videos from tape to PC. hope this helps. thanks :)

Sony DCR-hc42 video camera problems

Buy a Sony-make head cleaning cassette and play it in the camera for 10 seconds. Do not play for more time, neither forward or reverse the cleaning cassette, otherwise you will damage the head of the camera. This cleaning cassette is to be thrown when it is fully played (and not rewound!).

Where can get the sony handycam DCR-HC42 device drivers support Windows vista

If you want to use the USB cable to connect the Camera to the Computer to transfer the video to the Computer then:

This Camcorder does not support USB streaming with the VISTA Operating System. Use an i.LINK cable to transfer the video to the Computer. The i.LINK port is also called IEEE 1394 or Firewire port. (An i.LINK is a black D shaped connector with 4 or 6 pins. The type of cable to be used will depend on the i.LINK port of your Computer. The Sony Camcorder will have the 4 pin i.LINK cable and if the computer has the 6 pin i.LINK port, then you may have to use the 4 pin to 6 pin i.LINK Cable).

You can use any video capturing software like Windows Movie Maker to transfer the video from the Computer.

Refer this link for the instruction to transfer the video to the Computer using i.LINK cable.

http://www.kb.sony.com/selfservice/documentLink.do?externalId=C111893

NOTE: As the Camcorder does not support USB streaming with Vista, it is not required to use any Sony Device Driver to transfer the video to the Computer. You do not require any Drivers or Software from Sony to transfer the video from the Camcorder to the Computer using the i.LINK/Firewire interface.

A C31:40 error indicates that the drum (the spinning video head) is either not spinning or is not supplying a signal to the main computer to tell the computer it is spinning. It could be a bad drum or a loose connection. It will likely take a qualified technician to verify the diagnosis.
