First, do not plug in the drive or power it on until you have diagnosed the problem, you may end up damage it more!
There are two potential problems here:
1. (The better outcome) The encasing itself has been broken, the controller or some other part has been damaged. To diagnose this, take the hard drive out of the case and plug it into another computer
2. The hard drive has been damaged. In this case try these guys, they're pretty good:

Want to change a maxtor 3200 from windows format to apple mac

When you plug the drive, once mounted on the mac, go to applications>utilities>disk utilities then select the drive and choose partition. If you want the drive to be bootable you should then choose Mac OS Extended (journaled).

Drive is connected, blue light shows, but it keeps giving a clicking over noise, and cannot read our mac

The click of death - the hard disk inside has suffered a terminal mechanical fault. Sorry, nothing can be done to fix it, it's dead, just junk it and buy a new one.

Maxator hard drive not being recognized

Well all good things must end and it sounds like this one has. If it doesn't connect in either computer then something inside has either been bumped loose or it's broken.

PC/Mac compatability issues

Hi
Is it formatted in NTFS? OSX will read most formats but cannot write to NTFS.
I would suggest that you copy all your files from the drive on to the Mac then use disk utility to reformat the drive in the native Mac format and then copy everything back again.
You may find that once formatted, Time machine will pop up and ask if you want to use the drive as your time-machine back-up. If the drive is the same size as the Mac's drive (or smaller) I would say NO and get a larger drive to use for TM.
If you need to connect the drive to a windows machine at all then don't use the native format (HFS+), use FAT instead. The mac can work with that (although it will probably mess up your files names).

No green light

If this is a new drive you will have to fdisk it and format it. It should have came with a cd driver disk to run before you plug it in. It will help you set everything up.

You need to open the enclosure and either put the drive in another enclosure or connect it directly to your computer.

Or you can pay to send it to data recovery people and they will get all the data off.

Solid green light.

Disk Warrior.  I had a similar problem and it worked like voodoo.  Plus, a) you can download it direct from the company and b) if it can't fix it it won't screw it up any further.

Harddrive is not recognised by my Mac OSX (10.4.8)

When you reboot and hold down the option key, does the drive show up during that initial process? Is the weird noise more like clicking or more like a high-pitched whirring? If the drive has been damaged on a hardware level (causes too numerous to list... age, power fluctuations, being knocked over or dropped, corrosion, poor workmanship...) and won't show up at all, it is probably now a paperweight. There are a couple of utilities available to troubleshoot disc problems for Macs. The most popular are Disk Warrior and Tech Tool Pro. They can often "see" a disc that Disc Utilities misses, and assist you in copying the data from the drive. This process is important to be cautious with, however, since your drive is making noises it should no longer be considered reliable and the best hope is to retrieve your data and then get a new one or have yours replaced [if it is under warranty].
