Question about Sharp R-1480 Microwave Oven

9 Answers

R-1480 I inadvertently applied 230V instead of 115V to my microwave model R-1480. I beleive the main circuit board is now bad. I see 4 diodes arranged in what I think is a full wave bridge rectifyer. D1, D2, D3 and D4. The diodes look like they have burned. There is also a transformer T1 with one side overheated. Can I purchase the main circuit board?

I see only one circuit board in the Sharp R1480 microwave oven and it is not a power adapter board. Looks more like the main circuit board, located just behind the control panel.
The site you refferenced for parts does not seem to carry any circuit boards for Sharp microwave ovens, and no parts for the R-1480.

Again, can I purchase the main circuit board located just behind the control panel and if so, where?

I would love to Compare the price of the mainboard with gettin new Microwave if only you guys would answer my question as to where to obtain a new board.
Again, where can I purchase the main circuit board located just behind the control panel?
Then I could do a price compairson.

Your last response stated "How old is this Microwave? The unit first came out 8 years ago, and if it's this old, and has suffered this much damage, I would replace the unit rather then repairing it."

Unit is only 6 yrs old and used 2 months every year. The only damage is to the circui board behind the control panel.

Again, I would like to know where to pruchase the ckt board. Then I can make an informed dicision as to repair or replace.

In your last response, you stated "i am an engineering student

if you r saying that diodes r burned then you must get these replaced by the same rating diodes

these will only work if all diodes in bridge r connected"

I am an eletrical engineer. I spent 6 years teaching the science of Metrology in the US Air Force. Metrology, as you know is the science of measurement, primarilly electrical. I also worked 23 years as a engineer for Hewlett Packard.

I stated that the diodes D1 thru D4 are burned as well as the transformer T1. I could replace these componets if I knew their parameters or part numbers and a source to purchase these componets.

I just seems easier to me, to replace the whole circuit board. Would you please stop beating around the bush and tell me where I can purchase the circuit board.

If you are unable to give this simple information, just refund my money

    Thanks
    Dave

Finally, the information I asked for!
This will help in my decision as to repair or replace.

    Thanks

I guess you didn't bother to check the site I posted. It has the board you are looking for, for only $107, but I guess you didn't want to log in as a guest and then enter the part number I funrnished you which is the part number of the board you want. If you want to pay almost double, go ahead.

It's great that you are an engineer, I am just a lowly technician who makes a living fixing electronics for the past 18 years. I know the best places to get all the parts for almost anything you would try to fix. I looked up the part number in the Sharp R1480 service manual for you and gave you the website that has the best price for that board.

I am sorry you overlooked my solution for you, it could have saved you some money. I could have even given you the part numbers for the diodes and transformer if you would have wanted to save even more money, instead of replacing the entire board, but you wanted the board information, so that's what I gave you.

By the way, thanks for your service to our great country, I too am a veteran, a disabled veteran (Army for 7 years).

Good luck with your repair on this microwave, if you need some real honest help from somebody who repairs these and many other types of electronics, contact me directly, I honor your service in the Air Force and am willing to give as much assistance as I am capable of.

No power to unit replaced thermostat , door switches, diode on capacitor but not the two fuses continuity goes to 0

There are 2 thermostats or "thermal fuses" in it that would cause no power. One is on the magnetron, the other is above the microwave cavity near the middle. Have you checked/replaced both? You should have 120 volts between the white wire on the main relay on the circuit board & the black wire in the smaller connector on the board. If you do, bad board, if not, something before the board (fuses, thermostats, noise filter board, etc). Door switches, diode, capacitor would not cause no power to unit.

Whirlpool microwave keeps opening high voltage diode

If you do not have any experience in the repair of microwave ovens do not engage in their repairs because it is one of the most dangerous household appliances and the consequences can be disastrous. According to your description, low voltage circuit (220V or 110V) works well (light, turntable...). Obviously the problem is in a high voltage (HV) circuit which is made up of the magnetron, HV diode (rectifier), HV capacitor and HV fuse or protect diode. Failure is in any of these components in "HV circuit" or sometimes in interlock switch assembly or PC Board.

First, you must be sure which diode is blowed, reactifier or protect diode.

To check magnetron following this procedure:

Discconect the mains supply.
Check that the capacitor is discharged (by resistor 100 ohm / 10W or more).
Discconect the magnetron.
Measure the resistence between the disconnected terminals (should be app. 0.5 ohm).
Measure the resistance between the supply terminals (both) and earth. The resistance should be infinite.

Sharpe model R-1480 not heating (it sounds a little louder)

A loud sort of "groaning" noise and no heat is the sign of a bad magnetron tube. The magnetron is the microwave source, and when they go bad it's usually time to replace the oven. Most microwave repairs, especially a magnetron replacement, should be left to professionals. There are lethal voltages under the cover, and the chance of microwave leakage if the repair isn't done properly. With the price of a replacement tube and labor for the repair, it's often doesn't cost much more (and sometimes even less!) to buy a new oven.

Sorry I can't give you a more positive answer, but thanks for using Fixya!

What keeps blowing my fuse on my Sharp R-1480 microwave oven ?

A short circuit diode will do that or shorted turns in the magnetron high voltage transformer, or the magnetron or a sticky/contaminated door switch.
Hope that helps.

EE3

Is your model number something like R22 or R24?

If so, "EE3" is "Magnetron (1) and (2) failure".

Most commonly this is caused by a bad door switch or door switch mount or a bad connection or bad relay on the circuit board.

We have a service manual for these models and have uploaded it to our site here to help you.

You will need the free Adobe Reader to view or print it.

Please reply back with your model number if you need more help.

We're happy to help you with free advice and we'd appreciate your thoughtful rating of our answer.

Dead replaced fuse now makes loud noise

Yes that noise is causing your fuse to blow. Machine gun sound sounds like the High Voltage Capacitor or High voltage diode is bad. (Loud humming sound is usually a bad magnetron or bad power transformer). Most of these parts are inexpensive, except for the magnetron. But most of the repair bill is most likely going to be for labor.

Based on your model, it looks like an over the range microwave. And to fix any of these problems require the removal of the microwave from the wall. So its up to you if you want to deal with that hassle. But you also have to consider that you'll probably have a hard time trying to find a new microwave that will fit.
