after a few hours of uninstall/install finally got HP photo & imaging to work using WIA-HP Scanjet 3970 1.0 (32-32) as source selection TWAIN selection won't work. Seems to be runjing ok now with v2.2 and all fixes available on HP web. Director still requires alt/space and minimize twice to get it up. Good to have my scanner back.

doesn't matter how many times I install and uninstall and reinstall this scanner, the software and HW is trash. "failed to create empty document" and "unable to communicate" is the only output I have gotten from the 5590...garbage...

Is there a way to make this expensive paperweight and desktop filler work?

I have alse the "failed to create empty document"problem with my scanjet 4670 scanner.
Call the "HP Photo&Imaging"in compatibility mode (W2000) it seem to be better.
I know the problem has to do with the HP laserjet P2015 printer.

This might probably help, see the Diagnostic description, Patch etc... to download, havn't tried it yet but maybe its the solution for errors.

It is dell optiplex 755 ,when i on my pc it freeze after a certain seconds & not display to the monitor.

Do you have a good working monitor that you can troubleshoot with? I would make sure the monitor isn't going bad first. Then if you're still having the same issue, try re-booting in safe mode and run a virus scan.

HP scanjet 3970 is not compatible with Window 7 - what I must do

Hello By mtpflang
If you don't want to purchase a new device , the only solution is a workaround :
solution one:
If you have the W XP install disc , you can install a virtual version of W XP on your machine from http://www.vmware.com/products/player/
solution two :
If you still have the install disc , you can also partition your primary and install W XP on the new partition from http://download.cnet.com/Partition-Wizard-Home-Edition/3000-2094_4-10962200.html.
Back up your data first.
solution three:
I have Win 7 on my primary and installed Win XP on my secundary . Works like a charm .

I have a hp scanjet 3670 flatbed scanner and cannot get the toolbox desktop icon anymore with which i used to be able to select what kind of scan to do, such as picture, document or color slides' I have...

This is something you need to talk to Hp about. Hp which maked your old scanner is the only one who would need to rewrite a software package that will work in the new win 7 operating system.

I do have a solution to your issue without calling on HP to help you:

Dual boot your harddrive: One side Win 7 and the other Win xp. Use your Hp scanjet and it's toolbox software in win xp and now you will never have compatiblitity issues with your unit again.

If you need to know how to dual boot your hard drive, let me know and I'll tell you ok?

I've had my scanjet 3970 for several years with no problems until yesterday when it started doing all kinds of crazy things. Firstly, I get a message "Failed to create empty document", followed by a...

Sounds like the problem is on your computer and with the hp software installed.

Seems like from what you told me that your scanner in itself is OK, the issue is on your computer.

What I would recommend you do, is fully uninstall all related software and drivers from the computer (for this device) and unplug it from the computer.

Once you have done so, you can obtain the software and drivers for it from http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&product=298548& or use the cd that came with the product, the page linked will have up to date software as the cd might be old.

Download the software - install it - plug in when asked or if not asked, after the setup is complete, try scanning.

Let me know if you need further assistance.

Fuse for hp 3970

After you have UnScrewed and Opened Up the Scanner.
On the Circuit Board (Green Board with Electronic Components) just where you Plug in the Power Pin there is a Small Glass Tube Looking Component.
You need to replace that with a 1.2mA Fuse.

Hope this Helps
