If the problem is on the side of the modem, the best bet is to unplug your router, reset your modem (through power cycle or reset button), then plug the ethernet cable from the modem into your router, then plug your router back in.

I need to connect a D-Link router to my cable modem so that I can use my laptop anywhere in my home

Cable-modem <-- Ethernet cable --> WAN (or "Internet") port on the router

LAN port on router <-- Ethernet cable --> network-port on your laptop

Then, access the "built-in" web-server on the router,
and run the "Wireless Networking Setup" wizard:
* to set an SSID ("network-name")
* an encryption-level (Hint: choose 'wpa')
* a password for your wireless network

Then, disconnect the Ethernet cable from your computer,
and then "wireless available wireless networks".
Select your newly-created network, and connect to it.

If you mean phone modem on PC then no. Check connection between pc and router by acessing the webinterface (instuctions in linksys user manual).

If all OK there then contact your ISP.

Cable and wireless question

Not possible, since the "input" to the 2WIRE modem is a 4-wire telephone-line, not an 8-wire Ethernet cable.

Instead, spend about $40 to buy a D-Link Wireless G modem, and connect its WAN port to the cable-modem, and connect up to 4 Ethernet cables to "wired" computers, and configure the "wireless" component of the D-Link router.

What settings do I use/change to connect wirelessly to my wireless modem,at the the moment I am using Ethernet cable as modem has 4 ethernet inputs.Just simply want set up Dell desktop 3100 Dimension...

To set up a wireless network one computer still has to be wired, ie. connected to the router with ethernet. This will allow the other computers in the network to connect wirelessly if they have wireless cards installed. Hope this helps.

When i first connect my daughters computer with an belkin wireless router than i stop working than i purchase an d-link not thinking it would make a different but it didn't and still not working do i ahve...

No you can't use two routers (without being an expert to set them up correctly!). Make sure the Belkin isn't plugged in while you're setting up the D-Link. To diagnose the culprit, try these steps:

1) Plug your daughter's computer directly into the ethernet port of the DSL or Cable Modem. You'll need to do this to rule out your Daughter's PC as the problem. If it works fine, then move to step 2. If her computer still isn't working, and another computer connected the same way DOES work - then you need to work on your daughter's computer, becasue that's where the problem lies.

2) Ok since you confirmed your daughter's PC is just fine - and also the DSL or Cable connection is working as well - this indicates most likely the router(s) are at fault. So let's work with the D-Link, since we're not sure if the Belkin is working. Like I said, be sure the Belkin is completely unplugged and powered OFF. Now plug the D-Link into your DSL or Cable modem ethernet port. Turn on the D-Link, make sure the correct indicators are lit on both the DSL/Cable modem and the router. Reboot your daughter's PC and right-click on the wireless networking icon on her taskbar. Choose view available wireless networks - if you see your D-link listed, then the router is working! If you still can't connect - try disabling WEP/WAP and try again. Most likely it's just a security setting that's off.

Good Luck!

it will as long as the modem/router is connected to a phone line, instead of the pc, the only cable connected to the pc should be a ethernet cable; or you have the pc networking set that it connects via another pc instead of through a gateway, re run the wireless network wizard.
